Edgar E. Houghton, a retired Presbyterian minister, died Friday at Ephraim McDowell Memorial Hospital. He was 85. Houghton, of 123 1/2 North Fifth Street, served as minister of Anchorage Presbyterian Church for 37 years. He was a graduate of Davidson College and the Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary. He received an honorary doctoral degree at Centre College in 1955. Houghton also studied at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland and at the Union Theological Seminary in New York, and he studied and taught in Chefoo, China, and at the American University in Tehran. He is survived by his wife, Christine Houghton; a daughter, Jane Snowden of Danville; a son, William R. Houghton of Harrodsburg; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Services will be at 4 p.m. today at the Presbyterian Church, Danville. There will be no visitation. Preston-Pruitt Funeral Home, Danville, is in charge of the arrangements. Contributions are suggested to the Anchorage Presbyterian Church memorial fund.⁴

Deceased Name: ANDERSON, AGNES HOUGHTON
ANDERSON, AGNES HOUGHTON, age 97, wife of the late Raymond Anderson, who was Professor of Music at Birmingham-Southern College for many years, died quietly in her sleep on June 7, 2001, in Charlotte, North Carolina, where she had moved to be near her family.

She was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the daughter of the late Jennie and Elmer Houghton. She attended the Birmingham public schools. She graduated from Maryville College, where she met her husband on her first day of school. She sang in his church choirs at Independent Presbyterian Church, the First Methodist Church, and McCoy Methodist Church. Active in church work, and in the Chatelaine Club and the Tymes Club, she loved and replenished those who knew her. Her life was devoted, though, almost wholly to her husband, whom she loved and sustained always, and to her children and grandchildren. Mentally clear until her last few months, she remarked repeatedly that she had a long and happy life, and was ready for the Lord to take her anytime. A devout person, she had no doubt that one day she would join her loved ones beyond the grave. Perhaps her only regret was that, by so many years, she outlived many close friends and relatives.

She is survived by two children, a daughter, Mrs. Ruth Knight of Ogden, Utah, and a son, Dr. Richard Anderson and his wife, Suzanne, of Charlotte, NC, and by seven grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren, and four great great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held at Ridout's Valley Chapel, Homewood, on Sunday, June 10th, 5:30 until 7:00 P. M. Memorial services will be held at the Independent Presbyterian Church Chapel on Monday, June 11, 2001, 11:00 A. M. Memorials may be made to the Raymond F. Anderson Scholarship Fund at Birmingham-Southern College. Ridout's Valley Chapel directing.²
