Pioneer Settler in Elkland Township
Member of Family in Which Six Served in the War of the Rebellion
George N. Houghton, a pioneer settler of this section, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Maynard Delong, in this city on Friday, Dec. 15, at the age of 75 years.
He was born in the Township of Shaftsbury, Bennington county, Vermont, on Nov. 15, 1836. He was a resident of the State of New York when the War of the Rebellion broke out and enlisted in a New York regiment of infantry. He was honorably discharged for disabilities contracted in the service.
Mr. Houghton belonged to a family which was very active in the anti-slavery movement. His father and four brothers, besides himself, were members of the Union army in the Civil War, some of them serving all the four years of the struggles.
In 1864 Mr. Houghton was united in marriage with Miss Sarah Tinney, a daughter of a Genessee county (Mich.), clergyman. They came to Elkland township about the year 1871, taking up a homestead in the northeastern part of the township. Later they moved to Novesta township, and while there, Mr. Houghton conducted a large saw mill for several years on his farm, 3 miles south and 1/2 mile west of Cass City. Here they have lived until a few months ago, when Mr. Houghton's severe illness made it advisable for them to live with their daughter in this city.
Mr. Houghton has been afflicted with cancer for a period of 15 years, the last 10 years of which the disease has been of a serious nature. Cancer of the stomach was the cause of death.
The funeral was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Maynard Delong on Monday afternoon. Rev. W. B. Weaver, pastor of the M. E. church, officiating. Besides his wife, the deceased is survived by three sons, Edward of Lewiston, Wm. of Ellington township, and Chas. of Everett, Wash., one daughter, Mrs. Maynard Delong, and five brothers, A. G. and D. M. Houghton of this city, Wm. Houghton of Washington, Elias Houghton of Holly, and Harvey Houghton of Lewiston.⁶

MRS. SARAH HOUGHTON, Funeral Services Were Held Here Saturday Afternoon

The funeral services for the late Mrs. Sarah Houghton, whose death occurred in Pinehurst, Washington, on April 4, were held at the M. E. church at Cass City Saturday afternoon, April 13, Rev. J. D. Young, the pastor, officiating. The remains were interred in Elkland cemetery beside those of her husband.

Sarah Tinney was born in New York state in 1847 and came to Michigan with her parents when a small child, settling in Genessee county. On Dec. 27, 1864, she was united in marriage with Geo. Houghton. They came to Elkland township in 1868, and resided here until 1881 when they moved to Novesta township. After Mr. Houghton's death in 1911, Mrs. Houghton made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Maynard Delong, at Cass City and on Apr. 15, six years ago, moved with the Delong family to Washington.

Mrs. Houghton was a member of the M. E. church, having united with that society in girlhood. She is survived by two sons, E. S. Houghton of Grayling and C. R. Houghton of Everett, Wash., and one daughter, Mrs. Maynard Delong.

On Friday, A. G. Houghton and wife of Cass City and their son, Clarence of Ruth, D. M. Houghton of Cass City and G. N. Houghton and Mrs. Almeda M. Warner of Novesta all went to Ortonville, Oakland county, to attend the funeral of an elder brother, Jas. M. Houghton. Roy, son of A. G. Houghton, and Lew, son of D. M. Houghton, both of Detroit, met their parents at Ortonville to pay the last respects to their uncle. There were present four brothers, one sister, four daughters, and many other near relatives, besides a host of friends made during his 45 years' residence on a farm near Ortonville. He settled there in the early days, cleared up and operated the farm until a few years ago, having retired on account of old age to Pontiac where he passed away on the 13th. He buried his wife less than a year ago. Mr. Houghton attended the funeral of a younger sister ten days before his death.¹³

ANOTHER VETERAN ANSWERS CALL
A. G. Houghton Participated in 24 Battles of the Civil War
A. G. Houghton, Civil War veteran and for 48 years a resident of Tuscola county, passed away at his home on West Pine St., Cass City, on Friday, Dec. 26, after a lingering illness. He was 81 years of age.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. I. W. Cargo at the residence on Monday afternoon. Poems written by the deceased were used during the service. Burial was made in Elkland cemetery, members of the American Legion, in uniform, acting as pall bearers.
A. G. Houghton was born at Bennington, Vermont. He enlisted in the service of his country in 1861, at Ortonville, Oakland county, Michigan, becoming a member of Co. 1, 10th Michigan Infantry. He served during the entire war, was engaged in 24 battles, and was with General Sherman on his "march to the sea." Mr. Houghton received his discharge at Jackson, Mich., in 1865 and was united in marriage with Miss Alice M. Rock in Fenton, Mich., in 1869.
Coming to Tuscola county nearly a half century ago, Mr. Houghton came in contact with the hardships incident to the lives of the early settlers in the Thumb district. Mr. and Mrs. Houghton spent the early years of their married life in Novesta township where Mr. Houghton served as township clerk for eight years. They came to Cass City many years ago. For several years, Mr. Houghton was prominent in the activities of Milo Warner Post, G. A. R.
Besides his wife, he leaves five children, Mrs. George Hodges, Roy and Clarence Houghton, all of Detroit, Mrs. Joseph Dodge of Cass City and Mrs. Edith Mickle of Chicago.¹⁷
