Research Interests:
Challenging problems are being addressed for a wide range of time and space scales.
Research on large scale focuses on the ocean-atmosphere climate system. Simulations from global models with an interactive ocean are provoking new ideas and questions on low-frequency oscillations in the ocean-atmosphere climate system. Integrations spanning 100 years with a low resolution model highlight significant variability including that for decadal time scales even when "external" forcing parameters such as the solar constant, atmospheric dust, and trace gas concentrations in the atmosphere are kept fixed. Processes related to the seasonal cycle are well resolved in the simulations providing an opportunity to investigate climate dynamics for this time scale where there are major variations in the basic thermodynamic forcing of the atmosphere.
The availability of satellite and other new observational platforms offers the possibility to pursue research on mesoscale dynamics. The structuring and nature of precipitation systems remains a key mesoscale problem of interest. Carefully planned studies with mesoscale numerical models have made it possible to identify the relevance of theories, such as symmetric instability, for mesoscale phenomena and the impact of mesoscale structure in initial conditions. Soon it should be possible to make significant advances in our understanding of dynamically forced ageostrophic motions, sometimes manifest as gravity waves, and to better understand the processes in rapidly developing middle latitude cyclone systems including the relationships between synoptic scale flows, such as the jet stream, and frontal structure and precipitation.

ObituaryAug 30, 1991Springfield, MA, USA, Union-News (Springfield, MA) - August 30, 1991
Deceased Name: Marian L. Houghton, journalist
Marian L. Houghton, 78, of Jaffrey, a former reporter, died Wednesday in Concord Hospital.

She was the mother of Donald M. Houghton, a Chesterfield, Mass., selectman and Hampshire County commissioner.

She became a reporter in her 70s, and recently gained international attention for her reports and columns on life in small towns. Her weekly reports in the Jaffrey-Rindge Chronicle were the subject of a front-page story in The Wall Street Journal earlier this year.

That report spawned newspaper and magazine profiles and talk-show appearances on radio stations in Boston, Mass., and Manchester. Her reporting will be featured in a news magazine segment on a Boston television station program next month.

Houghton reported alongside wire services, network and national newspaper reporters every four years during New Hampshire's celebrated first-in-the-nation political primaries.

She kept a simple one-button camera packed in her purse after she discovered newspaper photography at the age of 74. She routinely filled four or five newspaper pages with her articles and photographs, and produced a column entitled "Ear to the Ground," a weekly compilation of anecdotes and observations on her family and life.

Born in Lynn, Mass., she was a member of United Church of Jaffrey and many organizations in the area.

She was the widow of Gerard Houghton.

Besides her son in Chesterfield, she leaves another son; four daughters, including Linda Dodge of Greenfield, Mass., and Elizabeth Houghton of Ashland, Mass; 10 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

A private burial will be conducted at Conant Cemetery, and there will be a memorial service Saturday in United Church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Marian Houghton Memorial Fund, in care of the Public Library, Jaffrey, N.H., 03452.

ObituaryApr 2, 2006San Francisco, San Francisco Co., CA, USA, Kenneth J. Houghton -- 'a Marine Corps legend'
Carl Nolte, Chronicle Staff Writer
Saturday, April 1, 2006

Kenneth J. Houghton, a retired Marine Corps major general who was one of the country's most dedicated military officers, died Monday of natural causes at his home in La Jolla (San Diego County). He was 85.
Gen. Houghton, who was born and raised in San Francisco, distinguished himself in three wars. He spent 35 years in the Marines, rising through the ranks to command two Marine divisions.
"He was a Marine Corps legend,'' said retired Maj. Gen. Michael Myatt, president of the Marines' Memorial Association in San Francisco.
Gen. Houghton participated in some of the most important campaigns in Marine Corps history -- the invasions of Japanese-held islands in the Pacific in World War II, and the battles for the Pusan Perimeter and the capture of Seoul in the Korean War.
Kenneth Houghton was born in San Francisco on Oct. 17, 1920, and as a young man was a batboy for the Seals baseball team. He graduated from Polytechnic High School and earned a degree in political science and economics from the University of San Francisco in 1942.
He immediately joined the Marine Corps and was selected for Officer Candidates School at Quantico, Va. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant and was shipped to the South Pacific, where he saw action at the bloody invasion of Tarawa Island in the Marshall Islands and on Saipan. By the end of 1944, he was a captain.
At the conclusion of the war, he was assigned to sea duty as commanding officer of the Marine detachment aboard a Navy cruiser.
When the Korean War began in 1950, he was a rifle company commander at Camp Pendleton (San Diego County). He and his men were shipped to the Far East and thrown into the desperate battles to hold the so-called Pusan Perimeter against the invading North Korean forces. He was a member of the 1st Provisional Marine Brigade -- which was called the Fire Brigade because it was sent to the hottest part of the fighting. The Fire Brigade was credited with the first defeats of North Korean forces in the war.
Once the perimeter was held, American forces staged an end run around the North Korean defenses with a daring landing at Inchon, not far from Seoul. Once again Capt. Houghton distinguished himself. Enemy forces had destroyed the bridges across the vital Han River, on the approaches to Seoul, and Capt. Houghton's reconnaissance forces were sent on the risky mission of feeling out the North Korean defenses across the river. Capt. Houghton and his handpicked men swam across the river and overpowered enemy sentries, paving the way for the Marines to cross the waterway in force.
He was wounded in that action, and received the Silver Star and Bronze Star medals for gallantry in Korea.
After a series of assignments, he was promoted to colonel in 1964, and in 1967, was commanding officer of the 5th Marine Regiment in Vietnam. He had a major role in Operation Union near Que Son, an action that was considered an important victory at the time. He also commanded another action, called Operation Union II, an intense battle that included South Vietnamese forces.
The 5th Marines received a presidential unit citation awarded in person by President Lyndon Johnson in a ceremony at the White House in 1968. Col. Houghton received the Navy Cross, a gold star in lieu of a second Bronze Star and two other awards in lieu of a second and third Purple Heart. He was promoted to brigadier general in the summer of 1968 and to major general in 1973. He also held the Legion of Merit with a Combat V, and several South Vietnamese medals.
He later commanded both the 1st Marine Division and the 3rd Marine Division, and was commanding general of the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego at the time of his retirement in 1977.
Gen. Houghton is survived by two sons, Samuel Houghton of San Clemente (Orange County), and Kenneth Houghton of Kauai, Hawaii; two daughters, Pamela Robles of Honolulu and Penny Dudek of Solana Beach (San Diego County); and six grandchildren.
A memorial service for Gen. Houghton will be held at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego at 11:30 a.m. on Monday.6

Kenneth J. Houghton was born in San Francisco, California, on October 17, 1920. He graduated from Polytechnic High School in 1938 and then attended the University of San Francisco. After graduating with a bachelor's degree in Political Science and Economics, Houghton enlisted in the Marines on April 15, 1942. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant on September 26.[

Houghton was attached to the 2nd Marine Division and was promoted to first lieutenant, taking part in the battle of Tarawa in November 1943 and later the Battle of Saipan in mid 1944. He was promoted to captain on December 31, 1944.[3]
Korean War

When the Korean War broke out, Captain Houghton was attached to the 1st Provisional Marine Brigade and took part in the Battle of Pusan Perimeter in August 1950. He then took part in the amphibious assault at Inchon in September. On September 19, he led a reconnaissance patrol across the Han River to an enemy held shore line. While the patrol swam to the shore, they came under heavy fire and Houghton was wounded. Despite his wounds, he managed to lead his Marines back across the river while under fire to safety. He was awarded his first Silver Star for his actions that day. He was later wounded again in October and was evacuated from the field. He remained in a hospital until January 1951, when he was also promoted to Major.[2][4]

In 1962, Houghton attended the Army War College and earned a master's degree in Political Science from George Washington University. He was promoted to colonel on July 1, 1964.

Vietnam War

In February 1967, Colonel Houghton deployed to Vietnam where he took command of the 5th Marines. He then took part in Operation Union, in which the 21st North Vietnamese Regiment was decimated near the Qu? S?n Valley, from April to May of that year. He was awarded his second Silver Star for his actions during Operation Union.[4]

On May 26, 1967, Colonel Houghton led the 5th Marines in a helicopter assault, commencing Operation Union II. The mission was to destroy the remnants of the 21st NVA Regiment. Houghton committed two of his battalions, 1/5 and 3/5, and succeeded in annihilating the enemy despite heavy resistance. When Colonel Houghton was informed another large enemy force was in the area, he ordered 1/5 and 3/5 to sweep the region. On June 2, the two battalions made contact with the 3rd NVA Regiment and came under heavy fire and took heavy casualties. Houghton sent his reserve battalion, 2/5, to attack the enemy's flank. Company F was nearly decimated, and the commanding officer, Captain James A. Graham, was awarded a posthumous Medal of Honor. Despite being wounded himself, Houghton led his regiment in destroying the enemy force. For his actions during Operation Union II, he was awarded the Navy Cross.[4]
Later career

Colonel Houghton left Vietnam in February 1968. On August 21 of that year, he was promoted to brigadier general. In October 1972, he became the commanding officer of 29 Palms, California. He assumed command of the 1st Marine Division in Camp Pendleton, California on May 1, 1973, and was promoted to major general the next day. Houghton relinquished command of the 1st Marine Division on August 12, 1974, subsequently assuming command of the 3rd Marine Division in Okinawa, Japan on August 23.[3]

On August 13, 1975, Houghton was relieved by Major General Herbert L. Wilkerson. Houghton assumed the role of Commanding General of Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, California. He served in this position until November 1, 1977, when he retired after 35 years of service.[3]

Houghton continued working with defense contractors until retiring again in 1999. He was also active in the Marine Corps Oral History Program and received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Commandant of the Marine Corps, Paul X. Kelley in June 1986.[5]

Kenneth J. Houghton died on March 27, 2006, in his home in La Jolla, California. He was buried in Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery3

ObituaryMay 10, 2017Shirley T. Houghton
Jan. 15, 1926 - May 1, 2017 Shirley T. Houghton died at home Monday, May 1, 2017 at the age of 91. She was born Shirley Anne Thompson to Richard, a physician, and Anne, a nurse, in Portland Jan. 15, 1926. Her lifetime of travel began that year in a bassinette in the back seat of a Studebaker touring car between Roseburg and New York after her father left the position of Douglas County Health Officer for a fellowship at Columbia University. She grew up in New Jersey and Denver where her father held medical school faculty positions. As a girl she crossed the country several times with her parents, traveled to Europe, and sailed to Puerto Rico. She graduated from Denver's East High School and met Donald L. Houghton at Colorado University in 1943 where he was studying civil engineering as a naval midshipman in the V12 training program. They married the next year in Providence, Rhode Island before he shipped out to the Pacific. After the war, Shirley and Don began an adventure that lasted for nearly 20 years, moving their family from one large hydroelectric project to another in many parts of the country. Shirley very much enjoyed the life, and taught her children to enjoy it too. She and Don taught the value of a good education, and always put family first. In 1963 they settled in Portland, where Don headed a department of the Army Corp of Engineers. Shirley pursued her considerable artistic talents in Portland, where she worked as a graphic artist for the Gresham School District, and, like her mother, enjoyed recognition as an accomplished weaver. She was a member of the Portland School of Arts and Crafts, working for a time in a building she later learned had been The Portland Women's Hospital, where she was born. Her iterate life fueled a strong interest in travel all over the world with Don, and after his death in 1981, with her friends. Her other passions included the Oregon Coast, liberal politics and a love of animals that led her to volunteer at the Oregon Zoo for years. Shirley is survived by her children, Leslie Anne Houghton, Eric Richard Houghton and Donald Cary Houghton; by seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
