ProblemWikitree, 2019: Name: Beatrix Pope, daughter of John Pope and Beatrix Houghton.
The Pope family of this generation is very poorly documented as the children do not appear in the vital records of Lancaster. That she was the daughter John and Beatrix Pope is apparently proven by a deed of her sister Margaret dated 3 October 1715. The original of this deed has not been found. It is confirmed, however, by a later deed dated 1 May 1730 where "Margaret Pope of Lancaster, spinster, sum of money to me in hand well and truly delivered and paid by my loving brother in law Elias Sawyer...of Lancaster... blacksmith... fifteen acres of land... in Lancaster... formerly laid out to the right of John Houghton ... and near to some land of John Prescott's."
Beatrix, the wife of Elias Sawyer, is commonly found in secondary sources and on the internet as Beatrix Houghton, daughter of Robert Houghton of Lancaster and his wife Esther Leffingwell. This is incorrect.
This Beatrix Houghton married Joseph White on 31 August 1711 in Boxford.[6] This is proven by the probate of her father Robert Houghton which names his daughter specifically as "Beatrix, wife of Joseph White." It is also not possible for the Beatrix Houghton who married Joseph White to have also married Elias Sawyer as the records for the two woman overlap.
It is also possible to find on the internet that the wife of Elias Sawyer was Beatrix Houghton, daughter of John Houghton of Lancaster (Richard's brother). Again, this is incorrect. This john Houghton did not have a daughter Beatrix as proven by his probate and the that of his son William which names all of his siblings.

Here we go... I can't find the 1715 deed which apparently says Margaret Pope had a sister Beatrix who married Elias Sawyer, but I did find this 1730 Deed:

Sawyer: Elias and father Thomas taken prisoner to Canada 26 Oct 1708 where they built the first mill in Canada in exchange for their freedom

BT: Elias Sawyer was captured by the Indians with his father and John Bigelow, while working at his father's saw mill in Lancaster, Mass. They were taken to Canada, where Elias and Bigelow were turned over to the French, but the father (Thomas) was saved for torture. Thomas pleaded with the French governor for the freedom of the three, offering to build a sawmill, the first in Canada. The Indians refused to give him up and finally when he was tied to the stake a priest appeared holding a large key. He told the Indians that unless they released Sawyer, he would unlock the gates of Purgatory and throw them all in. Sawyer was released and with his son Elias and John Bigelow built the sawmill; then he and Bigelow returned to Lancaster. Elias remained in Canada for another year to instruct others to run the mill; then he too returned to Lancaster where he married Beatrix Houghton. Tradition holds that an Indian maiden fell in love with Elias while he was in Canada and followed him to Lancaster. A little brown earthen plate given him as a memento is still in existence. W.F. S. Phineas Houghton died at his daughter, Mrs. Reed, Tuesday, July 16 1901, at 3 o'clock in the afternoon, in his 100th year. Mr. Houghton was born in Brattleboro, Vermont, July 14, 1802. Last Sunday was his 99th birthday. He is probably one of the oldest persons in Nebraska. He became a resident of this county 26 years ago. Mr. Houghton is the last of his generation and Mrs. Reed is the last of his children. He lived through every presidential administration, except Washington's. He voted for Abe Lincoln and remained a staunch republican, voting at every election to the time of his demise. The funeral occurred at the home of his daughter Wednesday afternoon conducted by the Rev. Phillips, and all that was mortal was laid to rest at Rose Hill Cemetery.10

I have a family history written by a grgrandaughter, (Lucy Voiles I believe), of PW where it says that Gramp Houghton came from Canada (Scotch Descent). I don't believe though that the scotch descent part is accurate.7

ResearchCarol Church: Thank you for your prompt reponse. I have also been looking but not to the extent you have. The Nichols are still "out there" someplace also but I think that Abigail and Sam were either married in Mass or returned there in the mid 1770's as the older children all "report" in the 1850 census that they were born there. The oldest one, Abigail Nichols, was born 1776, I think. So 1757 is a good "possible" dob for Abigail but just "speculation".. I sub to the NEHGS and have been searching there recently. I found an Abigail born 1754 in Bolton, Mass, daughter of Asa and Elizabeth. She had, apparently, only one brother and one sister. Someone on ancestry had esearched the brother but the sister is reported to have died young (Olive?) The birth was recorded in Harvard. I know Harvard has been explored as a possible residence for Sam but nothing confirmed. I have tried to connect these families to the Cutlers as possilbe kinfolk, but so far nothing has told me that they were aquainted before they got to VT.3

ResearchLauri Nichols Kemmerling, 2022: I have been doing genealogy research on my father's (Nichols) line and am "stuck" because there seems to be two Samuel Nichols who are related to my line but this one, who married Abigail Houghton, seems most likely. If their son John, born c.1795 is the John Nichols that married Aurelia Jenks (daughter of Boomer Jenks) then this is the correct Samuel Nichols.

The second Samuel Nichols (often referred to as Deacon Samuel Nichols) appears to be related (some say the twin of the above Samuel) as they have the same birth date January 15, 1757 but differing dates of death (the above has been listed as Feb. 12, 1836 and Deacon Samuel as February 12, 1842). Deacon Samuel Nichols married Rhoda Carpenter.

Both of these Samuel Nichols are listed in various places as sons of Samuel Nichols (1728-1777) and Anna Stevens Nichols (1732-1811) and are of the Guilford, VT area.

ContributnI have recently started to consider that the ancestry of Samuel Nichols goes back to Francis Nichols who was the founder of Stratford, CT. I have found some early settlers there who are allied with the Nichols or their descendants.3
