Biography

In 1834 "he made a purchase of 160 acres of land from Joshua Kemper on Upper Big Creek. According to Jefferson County historian, E. O. Muncie, a "Jacob" Houghton was listed as an operator of the first horse drawn gristmill of Upper Big Creek. Local records spelled his name as Jacob. On land records at the Register of Deeds office in the county seat of Madison Indiana, he signed his name clearly as "Joab"."⁴

Problem

Birthdate: He supposedly was born in 1755, but that means his last 2 kids were born when he was 69 and 76 years old. It may be 1775 or 1778 which makes more sense. But that elimates his Rev. War service per DAR.

JWH: All the 13 listed children were erroneously given by J.W. Houghton, p. 343, as the children of Joab Jr.'s father Col. Joab, including a William and a Joab (probably Joab Jr and brother William).²⁰

Obituary

Sarah is described as a sweet and lovable lady who really was able to control her obstinate husband, who would rather be wrong than give up his opinion. She and her daughters smoked little shaker pipes as they sat around the fireplace in the evening, lighting their pipes in the embers.
Since the Golden cabin was on the traveled trail, she was often hostess to passers by.
***She was a charter member of Golden Point Christian Church.
Sarah died at the "Red House", where her daughter Charlotte and husband Henry Benner lived.
Obituary:
Died in Sonora Township of Hancock , Ill. February 24, 1876, Mrs. Sarah Golden, relict of the late Abram Golden, of the same place.
The deceased was born at Peluma Station ( now Washington, Mason County), Kentucky on the 24th of October, 1790. She emigrated with her husband and family to Morgan County, Ill. In 1824, from there to Sonora township in 1833 and has been a constant resident of this place from that time until her death. It was her husband that Golden's Point was named after, he being the first settler on the prairie opposite the rapids.
The deceased was a highly respected Christian woman being of the Christian church for more than 40 years. She has resided, since the death of her husband some nine years ago--with her children, the principal part of the time with her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Benner, at whose home she died. Deceased raised a family of nine children, five of whom survive her. She has a great number of grandchildren, great grandchildren, and some great great grandchildren.
There are many now living who will remember of sharing the hospitality of her frontier cabin 30 or 40 years ago at Golden's Point.

Obituary

Abram was born is Hopewell, NJ. He moved to Maysville, KY, where he met and married Sarah Ann Houghton, 16 year-old daughter of Revolutionary War soldier, Aaron Houghton and Elizabeth Sexton, and grand-daughter of Hopewell's Colonel Joab Houghton.
***Abram served in the war of 1812 as a volunteer in the army of Govenor Isaac Shelby's 3rd regiment, Kentucky Mounted Militia, in Captain Arthur Mitchell's company under the command of Colonel Pogue. This unit was also known as the "Kentucky Rangers". His service dates were from August 1812 - November 1813. He fought in the Battle of Thames in which the Michigan Territory was won back from the British General Proctor. In this battle, the Indian, Tecumseh, was killed. He received a sum of 27 cents a day for his service and was allowed an additional 40 cents daily to feed his horse. After losing his horse near the mouth of the Portage River, he was allowed $65.00 for this loss. Records show that he received more for the horse than for risking his life !!
***Abraham resided in Maysville until 1824, when he moved with his family (8 children), and relocated near Jacksonville, in Morgan County, Illinois. His last two children were born in Morgan County. It is thought he lived there until 1832, when he moved further west, stopping in Sonora Township, Hancock County, Illinois, near the town of Commerce (which was later named Nauvoo by the Mormons). It is said that he carried two-year-old Charles much of the way on his shoulders.
***He was one of the first settlers of Sonora Township.
***Pioneers of Old Hopewell records that "Mr. Golden was the pioneer of that region, his cabin being the first to be erected on the edge of the prairie near the rapids, and being just after the close of the Black Hawk way, amy roving bands of hostile Indians still infested the country."
***In 1833, he built a cabin and settled on the north side of "Golden's Creek", now called Larry's Creek". The land along this creek was mostly wooded and extended from a point of timber along the creek onto the prairie, almost reaching the Mississippi. This large tract of land was later divided into smalled farms and given to family members, or descendants, or sold to friends and new settlers.
***In 1847, he was joined by his brother Jared, who, with his family, also came from Maysville, Kentucky and settled on the south side of the creek. The holdings of Abraham and Jared were originally described as "S part of Sec 27,28,29 and N part of Sec 32,33,and 34, Sonora Township, 6N R8W, of 4th Prin. M along Larry Creek, Hancock County.
***Abraham was an early pioneer of this region, building his cabin on the edge of the prairie, a few miles inland from the DesMoines Rapids of the Mississippi River. This location became known as Golden's Point Crossing". Near this place, were the crossroads of the Old Rock Island Trail and others, running in different directions. From here, travelers could go west to Sonora Landing and Post Office; Northwest to Commerce or Nauvoo, North to Old Niota, and to a ferry crossing into IA or on to Appanoose and Pontusuc, where grist mills were located; Eastward to Carthage, Fountain Green and Webster; and South to Elderville, Warsaw, Keokuk and Quincy.
***Abraham, with his sons and son-in-laws were members of the "Illinois Rangers", which succeeded in driving hostile Indian bands to the west side of the Mississippi River.
***On the lowlands along the creek, a log and frame church was built, known as "Golden Point Christian Church". Later, because the water from the creek threatened to flood the area, the church was torn down, and a new building was built about 3/4 of a mile south, on land donated by Isaac and Eugenia Baxter. The church still carries the name Golden Point Christian Church (2006)
***The old Golden Schoolhouse, is now a home. It stands near the Golden homestead and is still known as the "Golden Schoolhouse". A few hundred yards behind the schoolhouse, is where Abraham build his cabin and barn.
***In October of 1844, he was among 96 men summoned by the Hancock Count Circuit Court for jury duty in the trial of the men who had killed Joseph Smith, founder of the Mormon Church. He was later excused -- two of his daughters, Evelyn and Catherine, had married Mormons.
***Abram died at the home of his daughter, Jeanette and her husband, James Wilson. This house still stands west of the Sterns Cemetery. (2006) It was one of the first non-log houses built in the area. It was originally built of stone, but it has since been covered in stucco.
***The death date on most records say Jan 10, 1866, however the memorial stone clearly says Jan 10, 1867.

They were pioneers in IL. They erected one of the first cabins on the edge of the prairie soon after the Black Hawk war. Hostile Indians were kept in check by "The Illinois Rangers", a semi-military company, in which some of Golden's children and sons-in-laws were members.^15,17

Cox-- who names Charlotte, and confirms her d. date as c.1819, if she was b.
c.1786. But that would also work if she was b. 1783 and d. 1816, as you
have it. The latter birth date, however, doesn't quite jibe with the birth
date of her next younger sister, Mary, who was b. c.1784 according to Cox.⁴

CONANT CONE, son of Joseph Cone [61] and Martha
Spencer, b. East Haddam July 6, 1760, m. Alice Houghton,
second dau. of Joab Houghton Maj', 1780. She d. June 3, 1824,
aged 62 years. He was a gallant soldier during Revolutionary War,
enlisting Feb. 16, 1777, for three years in Capt Eliphalet Holmes's
company, in regiment commanded by Col. Jedidiah Huntington, of
Connecticut Line. Took the field at Peekskill, N. Y., spring of
1777. Remained in camp until ordered to Gen. Washington's army
in Pennsylvania in Sept. 1777. Was in battle of Germantown.
Wintered at Valley Forge 1777-8. Was in battle of Monmouth.
June 28,1778, and served in 1779 in repelling forces in Gen. Tryon's
'•'Invasion," and was discharged Feb. 16, 1780. He removed to
Princeton, N. J., soon after marriage, and all his ch. were born
there. He d. insane in 1799.

Howard Houghto: "Alfred was stationed at Fort Blue Mounds, Wisconsin during the Black Hawk War in 1832. He was a lead miner in te employ of Ebenezer Brigham when hostilities broke out, and was undoubtedly one of the builders of the fort. He was listed in the roster as a 4^th sergeant. Wm Hileary Houghton, my great grandfather, was also stationed at the fort, as first sergent. After the war , Alfred moved to Monroe, Green County, Wisconsin, later moving to Sylvester Twp. There in 1838 he entered four "eighties" and one "forty" in sections 35 and 36....In 1865, they moved to Andrew County, Missouri, where he died."³

JOHN G. CONOVER, farmer; P. O. Biggs. As early as 1790, Peter Conover, of Monmouth Co., moved with his family to Woodford Co., Ky., where, in December, 1812, the subject of this sketch was born. The elder Conover was the youngest of five brothers, and the four oldest were all soldiers of the Revolution. In 1822, the Conover family, with a large number of relatives and acquaintances, desirous of locating beyond the influence of slavery, moved by wagons to this State, the journey occupying some months, and attended with hardships that would have deterred any but the stout-hearted. The party reached Springfield in June, and, after an examination of the country, chose the Jersey Prairie, in what is now Morgan Co., as the site of their future home. Peter Conover and his wife remained in this locality until their death, which occurred to the first in May, 1835, and to the latter in October, 1846. John G. Conover was married, in 1833, to Miss Susan Houghton; she died in 1845, and he was married, in 1846, to Mrs. Hannah Mitchell. He moved to this county in 1841, and settled in the vicinity of Bath. In 1849, he crossed the plains to California, and returned by way of the Isthmus in 1851. In the early days of Morgan and Menard Cos., he enjoyed the acquaintance of Lincoln, Yates and Col. Hardin, the latter making his home, in his youth, with the Conover family. Mr. Conover settled upon the place he now occupies, on Sec. 31, in 1866, consisting of 160 acres, well improved, and worth about $30 per acre. His business capacity and integrity have been recognized by the people of Sherman Township, and on various occasions they have chosen him Justice of the Peace, and, for five years in succession, Assessor.⁶

Andrew Merrill "A.M." & Barbara Ann (Renshaw) Houghton

Andrew Merrill Houghton, son of Elijah and Catherine Houghton, was born in 1826 [12 Oct 1825 - 2 Jan 1891 on stone], and always lived on the home farm.

He was a man of staunch character, a good neighbor, an enterprising and prosperous farmer, and had a large tract of fine land.

He married Miss Barbara A. Renshaw [18 Sep 1829 - 11 Oct 1918], of Sangamon County, Illinois, April 9, 1856. They had two children.

Lamenting the loss of their only son by death, they took into their home a little orphan boy, Marshal Grider, who grew to manhood and is now an honored citizen of Sangamon County.

Their daughter, Anna Maria, wife of John S. Hurie, died in 1910. Her influence in the home and community was gentle, refining and permanent.

Of the four sons of Mr. and Mrs. Hurie, one, Wiley Lin, is a minister; another one, Erle, an elder; and the oldest one, Andrew, a deacon.
