Harris A. Houghton
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Harris Ayers Houghton was a professional physician and military officer of the United State during and shortly after World War I. But his fame derives primarily in the role he played in bringing about the translation and publication in the English language of the infamous plagiarism, in the United States in 1920 known by the brief title as the Protocols of Zion.
On or about February 1, 1918, his personal assistant, Miss Natalie de Bogory, brought him an exceedingly rare book, a 1917 edition of Serge Nilus's book on the anti-Christ which incorporated into itself as an ending chapter the notorious plagiarism subsequently known briefly as the infamous Protocols of Zion. This rare edition had allegedly been brought to the United States by an unidentified Russian army officer who obtained it in Petrograd, Russia.
At the time of obtaining the text from Miss de Bogorty, Dr. Houghton was a military intelligence officer of the United States Department of War attached to the Eastern Department offices located on Governor's Island in the City of New York.
He was the son of a Methodist minister. In 1901 he graduated from the Syracuse University School of Medicine. He thereafter pursued advanced study in Berlin. In 1911 he received his commission as first lieutenant in the Medical Reserve Corps, achieving the position of Post Surgeon at Fort Totten, New York, and a few month later was appointed Post Intelligence Office at this installation. And in December of 1917 he was transferred and assigned to his position on Governor's Island.
Noted bibliographer of Judaica, Robert Singerman, describes Houghton as a "zealous counter-subversive, obsessed by the [alleged] Jewish threat to America's war effort ...". Singerman further informs us that this obsessiveness led Houghton to engage Miss de Bogory, as his personal assistant, for 9 months, and he paid for her time and work out of his own personal funds. Essentially, he retained her, and another former Russian military officer, former General G. J. Sosnowsky, to translate the Protocols of Zion into English."
Natalie de Bogory, (also deBogory), is primarily known for her notorious work in translating from the Russian language into the English language, and subsequently distributing and publishing the first American edition in the United State of the infamous Plagiarism known as the Protocols of Zion. She was the daughter of a general in the service of the tsar of Russia. Her parents had been imprisoned under the tsarist government for revoltionary involvements.
She worked as the assistant of the physician and military intelligence officer in the service of the U.S. War Department, Harris Ayers Houghton, who paid for her services out of his own private funds. Houghton engaged her as his personal and investigative assistant, for nine months, and subsequently claimed that no public funds were used for her services. She had obtained a Russian version of the Protocols of Zion from the notorious White Russian and extremely antisemitic, tsarist officer Boris Brasol, and thereafter she requested, under her own initiative and received authorization to translate it into the English language.
She did not independently, but close consultation Brasol, another former tsarist officer, General G. J. Sosnowsky.

On February 12, 1919, the Reverend George Simons testified in front of the Senate's Overman Committee, shocking listeners with the tale of a secret worldwide Jewish conspiracy. Simons cited the Protocols as evidence. It is generally assumed that Simons obtained his copy of the Protocols from Dr. Harris Houghton of military intelligence. Houghton had obtained his copy from the Czarist immigrant Boris Brasol.

"Senator King: Why are they so bitter toward religion, especially the Christian religion ?
Mr. Simons: There is a gentleman here in America who last night called on me, Dr. Harris A. Houghton, I think is his full name. I knew him out in Bay Side when I was the pastor of that church. He called on me last night. He is a Captain in the United States Army. I had not seen him for six years. He asked me whether I knew anything about the anti-Christian element in the Bolshevik regime. I said, "Indeed I do". I do know all about it." He said, "Did you ever come across the so-called Jewish protocols ?" I said "Yes, I have had them." "I have a memorandum" he said, "and last winter after much trouble I came into possession of a book which was called "REDUSTI, ANTI-CHRIST." Now, Dr. Houghton in the meantime had investigated this. He had come into possession of this book, which is quite rare now, because it was said that when the edition came out it was immediately bought up by the Jews in Petrograd and Moscow. That book reflects a real organization. That book is of some consequence. But the average person in official life here in Washington and elsewhere is afraid to handle it. Houghton says that even in his intelligence bureau they were afraid of it.
Senator King: Tell us about the book. What is bad about it ? Is it anti-Christian ?
Mr. Simons: It is anti-Christian and it shows what this secret Jewish society has been doing in order to make a conquest of the world, and to make the Christian forces as ineffective as possible, and finally to have the whole world, if you please, in their grip; and now in that book ever so many things are said with regard to their program and their methods, which devetail into the Bolshevik regime. It just looks as if that connected in some way.
Now, I have no animus against the Jews, but I have a great passion for truth: If there is anything in it I think we ought to know. The man who wrote it is considered a truth-loving man, a man held in the highest esteem by the authorities of the Russian Orthodox Church."

At the time of obtaining the text from Miss de Bogorty, Dr. Houghton was a military intelligence officer of the United States Department of War attached to the Eastern Department offices located on Governor's Island in the City of New York .
He was the son of a Methodist minister. In 1901 he graduated from the Syracuse University School of Medicine. He thereafter pursued advanced study in Berlin . In 1911 he received his commission as first lieutenant in the Medical Reserve Corps , achieving the position of Post Surgeon at Fort Totten , New York , and a few month later was appointed Post Intelligence Office at this installation. And in December of 1917 he was transferred and assigned to his position on Governor's Island .

Noted bibliographer of Judaica , Robert Singerman , describes Houghton as a "zealous counter-subversive, obsessed by the [alleged] Jewish threat to America's war effort ...". Singerman further informs us that this obsessiveness led Houghton to engage Miss de Bogory , as his personal assistant, for 9 months, and he paid for her time and work out of his own personal funds. Essentially, he retained her, and another former Russian military officer, former General G. J. Sosnowsky , to translate the Protocols of Zion into English.

Christopher Jon Bjerknes, The Manufacture and Sale of Saint Einstein (an online book); A letter to the New York Times, date Apr 13, 1923, accused Einstein of publishing a "Newtonian Duplication". He was involved in US Army Intelligence and in 1918 informed President Wilson and his cabinet of the Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion.
Houghton published the "Beckwith" English translation of the Protocols in 1920. Dr. Houghton also wrote to John Spargo, about Louis Marshall's letter to Max Stentor, of 26 September 1918, in an effort to convince Spargo that Marshall feared Zionists and believed Zionism was a part of a larger Jewish plot--which accusations Marshall denied. Boris Brasol may have been the one that brought the Protocols to the US Army Intelligence and convinced them of their authencity, viz. Dr. Harris Houghton and Natalie de Bogory. Houghton wrote to Arvid Reuterdahl on 15 Jul 1923. Reuterdahl wrote an anti Einstein article in 1921.

Jewish Virtual Library:
At the turn of the century, the Russian Czar’s secret police forged a document, The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, which purported to outline a plan for Jewish world domination. The Russians claimed that the radical Jewish intelligentsia gathered in 1897 at the First Zionist Congress in Basle, Switzerland wrote the Protocols. The document “showed” how a Jewish cabal was fomenting terror, causing famine and promoting war. Publication of the Protocols sparked anti-Jewish pogroms in Kiev and Kishineff.

While the Protocols were whispered about in anti-Semitic circles in the United States, they did not reach American shores in English translation until 1917. A Russian monarchist émigré, Boris Brasol, translated the Protocols into English and passed a copy to the State Department, hoping to persuade the United States government to withhold recognition of the Soviet regime. He was convinced that the Bolsheviks were in the pay of American Jewish bankers of German background -- Jacob Schiff and Felix Warburg in particular – who had financed the Czar's overthrow to advance German interests in World War I.

An American Army Intelligence officer in Brooklyn, Harris Ayres Houghton, MD, obtained Brasol’s translation of the Protocols and became convinced of their authenticity. An ardent anti-Semite and anticommunist, Houghton had the authority to act on his fantasies. According to historian Robert Singerman, writing in the journal of the American Jewish Historical Society,* Houghton “ordered one of his subordinates ‘to investigate any Jew as long as he was prominent’” for signs of subversion. In 1918, Houghton passed a copy of the Protocols to Chief Justice Charles Evans Hughes, chair of a government committee investigating a scandal in American wartime aircraft manufacture. Houghton was certain that “Jewish International Bankers” had caused the manufacturing problems, but Justice Hughes scoffed at the idea and denied the authenticity of the Protocols.

At first, the American Jewish community made no formal response to the typescript versions of the Protocols in circulation. They believed it best not to give them publicity. In 1920, however, a version was published in England and both Brasol and Houghton planned to bring out annotated versions in the United States. Brasol found a respectable company named Small, Maynard to publish his version. Putnam and Son publishers agreed to publish Houghton’s.

When the American Jewish Committee learned of Putnam’s plans, its president, Louis Marshall, contacted General George H. Putnam directly to discuss the publication project. Putnam defended it on the grounds of free speech, but Marshall countered that free speech is only protected if its is not libelous. Since there was ample proof that the Protocols were forgeries written to stir up violence against Jews, it would be irresponsible for Putnam to publish it without clearly labeling it a fraud. Putnam agreed, and withdrew from the project. Undaunted, Houghton found a financial sponsor, purchased the plates from Putnam’s, and published the work privately under the pseudonym of Peter Beckwith. The book sold poorly, however.

When Small, Maynard published Brasol’s edition, bookstores refused to carry it. Sales were robust by mail order, but Brasol’s hopes of reaching masses of Americans to convince them that communism was an outgrowth of Zionism were dashed, at least temporarily. Resilient in his efforts, Brasol sent a copy of the Protocols to automobile manufacturer Henry Ford, who was convinced that they were authentic. For the next two years, Ford gave the Protocols wide circulation in his newspaper, the Dearborn Independent.

Nothing did more to poison the atmosphere against American Jewry in the years between 1920 and 1922 than Ford’s publication of the Protocols. Apparently at Ford’s urging, the editor of the Dearborn Independent, William Cameron, reworked the Protocols into a series of articles, “The International Jew.”6,7,21,22

Katherine Ayres Houghton:
"Now this volume (CVJ: JWH's Genealogy) has many errors. My father together with J. C. L. Clark, the famous N.E. Historian, Mrs. Frockingham (wife of Prof. F. of Yale and Harvard) of Brattleboro, Vt, and Dame Thayer, also of Brattleboro researched for years on the Houghtons. Father came up with the Virkus IV account herewith presented. But he did something more wonderful than that, in his researches both in Libraries, court house records - field travels to ancestorial homes. He wrote histoires about their lives, interesting fascinating items - of what occupation; took pictures of their dwellings, pictures of their headstones - met many many New Englanders who helped him from dusty attic trunks - He, father put this background Houghton material in his authobiography. It was a grey-blue back?-poshed notebook- It was typewriter sized paper. He had it in Woodstock N.Y. (where he retired) - After his death, my brother got it. I have asked several times to have Bill send it to me, but he can't find it as Dad's things are packed away in his Bernardsville house. He says he'll get at it. I only want to borrow it. This autobiography contains not just a corrected Houghton line, but a life time work deal-metabolism, people of greate note he knew well all over the world & what is much more serious his M. I. experiences. This blue-grey buckrum? book is at least 5" thick with the experiences of a man of great genius...London man attempt to save mother's sight. My father studied almost three years abroad London, Berlin & Edinbourgh specializing - making forays to every known eye specialist to help mother. Nothing could save eye sight."23,24,12
