BiographyHe had a religious conversion and joined the Methodist Church. He entered the Methodist ministry in 1824 and was sent to Barre circuit as an associate to David Kilburn. He was a member of the VT conference. He went to Unity, NH, in 1825; to Deby, VT, in 1826; to Newbury, in 1827-28; to Croftsbury, in 1829; to Tuftonborough, NH, 1830-31; and to Lunenburgh, VT, in 1832. In 1833 he entered the practice of medicine for which he had prepared before his ministry. He was a chaplain in the Civil War of 38th Iowa and went to the South. When he returned north, he entered the ministry of the First Congregational Church of Lansing IA and was pastor there for 22 years.

A. H. Houghton, M.D., Lansing; was born in Springfield, in 1801; was educated for the medical profession at Dartmouth College, and subsequently traveled through the South, practicing his profession in several southern states. In 1856 he settled at Lansing, and in December of the same year he married Miss Unie Barrows, of Conn., who was born in 1819. Mr. H. taught the first public school in Lansing, and in 1870 retired from the practice of his profession, on account of declining health. He has served as county treasurer, county superintendent, and in other public offices. He has one son, Amasa Houghton, born December 8, 1857, who was educated at a private school taught by his mother, and at the public schools of Lansing. In 1879 he engaged in business as a photographer, and November 10, 1879, married Miss Mary Irle. They have one son, Andrew A. BiographySpringfield Hx: At 18 years he was apprenticed to Rufus Colton of Woodstock to learn the printer's trade. In 1827 he went to New York to work for Harper & Brothers. In 1834 he was at Castleton, Vt., and published a paper there. He and his brother Horatio simultaneously published a paper, he in Castleton, Horatio in Springfield; He printed 1 side and sent it to Horatio who printed the other. These brothers invented the system of "patent inside." He sold to creditors in 1835. He went to St. Louis to work on the Missouri Republican, but being an opponent of slavery he went up the river to Galena, IL, where he purchased the Northwestern Gazette and published it until 1863. He was appointed U.S. Consul to Lahaiua, Hawaii, by President Grant. On his return he was appointed postmaster at Galena.

JWH: "Horace Houghton went to Middleburg, Vt. in 1832 and established The American, a Whig paper, advocating the election of Henry Clay. Mr. Houghton was an Anti-Mason and allied himself with the Anti-Masonic party which elected Jackson. In 1869 he went as Consul to Brazil and the Hawaiian Islands, filling that position until the office was discontinued. His work was at seaport and his wife's health was broken by the climate, having to keep her in a hospital in Honolulu months before she was strong enough to sail for home, and his expenses were altogether $15,000; more than he got for his pay during the term of service. He was postmaster of Galena from 1874 until Pres. Hayes' election. He was a Presbyterian. He learned the printing business of Rufus Collan in Woodstock, Vt., and spent three years there, then journeyman printer at Amherst, N.H., was with Harper & Brothers, N.Y., and worked on the Central Gazette, N.Y. (night paper.) Health failed. Worked in Boston. In 1828 he published The Statesman at Castleton, Vt., till 1834. He was painfully bashful, yet true to his convictions and before he was aware was an influential political writer. Grant declared that he elected him. He published five newspapers at one time: Vermont Statesman, Rutland Herald, Record at Springfield, Vt; American at Middlebury, and Gazette at Vergennes, Vt., to neutralize the overpowering force of the city paper. He invented the 'fingers' for throwing off the sheet from the press, making the Adams press a complete book press, improving the Hoe machine and other cylinder presses, for which others reaped the rewards. It was a pleasure to him to have thus saved to the craft great labor. He was the first to print first sides of newspapers at a central point, for which pioneer idea he received no pecuniary reward. He came to marietta, Cincinnati, Louisville, St. Louis, and boarded with Lovejoy, where he was sounded on the slavery question and express himself so radically that it seemed best for him to leave that city. He educated at his own expense, persons for the ministry and for the foreign missionary field. he was conscientious, self-sacrificing in everything. His photograph would pass for Asa Houghton of Wellington, O. He never injured a man, never traduced another. He was a man of indefatigable industry.' The amount of newspaper work he would do was prodigious. Year in and year out he would average sixteen to eighteen hours a day in his printing office. To the strictest integrity he unite the most scrupulous honor. He was generous and devoted to his friends and has left a name which does infinite credit to the fraternity to which he belonged, and which will be held in honor and respect by all who knew him. Of those whom his influence raised to position were one President of the United States, one general of the armies, two members of Cabinet; two foreign ministers, four members of Congress, one Judge of the U.S. Circuit Court, one Judge of the Supreme Court of Illinois, three of the Circuit Court of Ill., one Lieut. Governer of Ill., five Generals of the U.S. Army, two consuls, all from Galena, Ill. All these his paper introduced to the public.'--Chicago Tribune, May 2, 1879. Newspapers were double leaded and gave columns of praise at his death. Hon. E.w. Washburn wrote a personal letter of condolence to his wife. The Fremont Journal, Stephenson Co., Ill., said of him: 'Mr. Houghton is one of the pioneers of the Northwest, having been identified with Galena for nearly half a century, and for many years was editor and proprietor of the Galena Gazette. He has done more in the troublous times of the past to mould public opinion than any other single man in the Mississippi Valley, and to his honor and credit be it said that always at all times and under all circumstances, his voice and influence have been upon the side of th right. His honesty, integrity and patriotism are unquestioned; and he ahas helped make more of our leading public men of this State what they are, than probably any other man in the State. He has ever labored for the good of the Republican party and the best interests of the country, and always without hope of reward. He has performed the labor, and others more crafty or avaricious have carried off the loaves and fishes. He is now an old man, and the only office or emolument he has ever received, which has been any benefit to him, is the one from which he now retires, to give place to a man who has been feeding at the public crib on a good salary for sixteen years. In common justice, in our humble opinion, Mr. Houghton should have been reappointed, and the men of either party who would have murmured would have been few and far between."

MLM: "Horace started life on a farm "in his own words, with no patrimony but a warm heart, etc." He was taught printing by Rufus Colton of Woodstock, Vermont, starting in 1824, receiving a salary of $5.00 per year as full wages; spent three years there. He then became a journeyman printer for Richard Boyleston at Amherst, New Hampshire; in 1827 he was with Harper Brothers, N.Y.C., and worked on the Central Gazette, a night paper, owned by Land & Turner. His health failed. Upon regaining it, he worked in Boston. In 1828, he published "The Statesman," at Castleton, Vermont, until 1834, having previously established "The American," a Whig paper, advocating the election of Henry Clay. Mr. Houghton was anti-Mason and allied himself with the anti-Masonic Party which elected Jackson (but his candidate was defeated.) He was painfully bashful, yet true to his convictions, and before he was aware, was an influential writer. President Grant declared that Mr. Houghton elected him. He published five newspapers at one time (the first newspaper chain?): the Vermont Statesman; the Rutland Herald; The Record of Springfield, Vermont; the American at Middlebury (partially owned by Hon. Ozias, son of Hon. Horation Seymour, who graduated from Middlebury College in 1820. A professor, he studied at Litchfield Law school; was admitted to the bar in 1824. The paper was a weeekly, started October 2, 1831. His creditors sold the Castleton business in 1835 - it died twenty-four years later (Hist. of Middlebury, Vermont by S. Swift, p. 340; History of Springfield, Vermont by C.H. Hubbard & Justice Dart, pr. 1895, p. 152) and the Gazette at Vergennes, Vermont, to neutralize the overpowering effect of the city papers. He invented "the fingers" for throwing the sheet from the press, for which others reaped the rewares. He improved the hoe machine and the cylinder press, also. It was a pleasure to have saved the craft thusly, great labor.
He was the first to print the first sides of the paper from the central point, for which he no pecuniary reward. He came from Marietta and Cincinnati, Ohio, and from Louisville and St. Louis, Missouri, making almost the entire trip afoot, and with empty pockets. In St. Louis he boared with Elijah Lovejoy, and there expounded upon the slavery question, expressing himself so radically that it seemed best for him to leave the city. He drifted to Galena, Illinois, in 1835, engaged in lead mining successfully, bot on the request of Sylvester M. Bartlett, he helped get out the Galena Gazette. In 1836 he bought half interest for $15,000, becoming sole proprietor for a like amount in 1842. In 1842 he sold out but resumed his connection the following year (but the files don't show this, M. McC.), remaining until December 1, 1869, when he sold out at the request of President Grant and accepted the consulate at lahaina, Sandwich Islands, filling that position until the office was discontinued in '74. His wife's health was broken by the climate. He had to keep her in a hospital in Honolulu for several months before she was strong enough to sail for home, and the expenses were altogther $15,000 more than he got payed for during his entire term of service.

He published the transcript from May 27, 1843 until failing health caused him to associate with a Mr. Wharton August 11, 1843. He sold out about a year later. He set up editorials without first writing them, they were so "red hot." He never was "for sale, " but often stodd alone and suffered for his opinions. The Galena papers said of him "he was modest in all his intercourse, pure in thought, and in all his actions, beloved and kind - too kind, as his kindness was often abused. He educated at his own expense, persons for the ministry and the missionary field. He was conscientious and self-sacrificing in everything. Of those whom his influence raised to positions: one President of the United States, one General of the Armies, two members of Cabinet, two foreign ministers, four members of Congress, one judge of the U.S. Circuit Court, one judge of the Supreme Court of Illinois, one Lieutenant Governor of Illinois, five Generals of the U.S. Army, and two Consuls, all from Galena.
All of these he introduced to the public (Chicago Tribune, dated May 2, 1879).
Newspapers were double-leaded and gave columns of praise at his death. The Honorable E. B. Washburne wrote a personal letter to his wife, and mentioned that Mr. Houghton was the first man with whom he made an acquaintance in Galena (April 1, 1840), and was always his best friend. He went to Minneapolis and started the Washburne-Crosby Milling Company. Ther Freeport Journal of Stephenson County wrote a glowing tribute of him. In 1874 he was elected postmaster of Galena, and served until the election of President Hayes. He resigned because of ill health in 1877. He was first connected with the Second Presbyterian Church of Galena, but after his second marriage joined the First Presbyterian Church."12,13,2

BiographySpringfield Hx: He converted in 1834 to the Methodist Church. In 1843 he was licensed to preach, after studying for 1 year at the Biblical Institute. He was a member of the New England Conference from 1844 to 1857. He went to Newbury, RI, to preach for 13 years, joining the Providence RI Conference, and was connected with the Seminary there. He then went to Iowa because of his wife's health, joining the Upper Iowa Conference in Lansing, IA. He preached there for 2 years without a salary, building the church there. He was the presiding elder of the Upper Iowa District from 1859 to 1862. He then returned to Lansing for 1 year. He was the elder of the Dubuque district from 1864 to 1868, then went to Epworth for 3 years, helping to establish the Seminary there. He rested for 2 years, then went to New Albion for 5 years. He preached the first sermon in New Albion when it had 14 saloons and less than 200 people. In 1860 he returned to Lansing, but his health failed during the year and he retired from active ministry work.

MLM: A Methodist minister who pub. in 1834 the "Record of the Times" with his brother. He was converted in '34 when he united with the M.E. Church and was licensed to preach. He spent one year at the Bible Institute at Newberry, then just established in connection with the Seminary. Then joined the Rhode Island Conference. First at Lansing, Allamakee Co., Iowa, 1859- 1862. Presiding elder, Dubuque District, then at Epworth, Dubuque Co. IA, for three years, and established the Epworth Seminary. After two years he went to New Albion, Allamakee Co., then back to Lansing. In 1860 there, his health failed. He representedd the General Conference in 1864. (Ref. HER INJURIES FATAL.

Mrs. Mary HOUGHTON, a decrepit, gray-haired woman, died yesterday afternoon, at 1015 East Fourteenth street, from injuries received by being struck by a Troost avenue cable car at Twelfth and Troost three weeks ago. Mrs. HOUGHTON was 61 years old and was the widow of H. H. HOUGHTON. She was in poor circumstances and for years had been supported by relatives.

While out for a walk on the afternoon of May 23 she was struck by the cable car, having walked directly in front of it. Her left collar-bone was broken and she was severely bruised about the body. Her injuries were not considered dangerous at the time, but because of her age she was unable to overcome the shock and gradually grew worse.

Coroner LANGSDALE will hold an inquest at Stine’s undertaking rooms this morning. The funeral will take place at 3 o’clock this afternoon. Interment will be in Elmwood cemetery.
