She was listed in the 1940 US Census of Joseph Scerri and Genevieve Katsanes in 1940 at San Francisco, San Francisco Co., CA, USA; age 36, housing construction floor layer.1 Maryann Sherry was listed in the 1940 US Census of Joseph Scerri and Genevieve Katsanes in 1950 at San Francisco, CA, USA; age 48, furniture factory upholsterer. Her married name was Konton. As of 1960, Maryann Sherry lived at Los Altos, CA, USA. As of 2019, Maryann Sherry and George Konton lived at Indio, CA, USA.
Obituary: : Maryann “Tootsie” Konton, 91, passed away of heart failure and complications related to dementia on March 23, 2023, at the Rose Garden Elderly Care Home in San Jose, California. She was born October 31, 1931, at St. Luke's Hospital in San Francisco, the oldest child of Joseph and Genevieve (Katsanes) Sherry.
Maryann graduated from Commerce High School in San Francisco, Class of 1949, affectionately known as the 49ers! Following graduation, Maryann worked at Livoti’s Pharmacy in San Francisco as a bookkeeper. Later during her marriage, she worked for Hewlett-Packard Company in Palo Alto for 28 years. While she started on the Wiring and Assembly Line, she ended her career as a chip designer for HP Labs. She was very proud that she laid out the chip design for HP’s very first calculator, the HP 35.
Maryann met her husband George when he played for the Greek-American soccer team in San Francisco while Maryann’s father was the coach of the Maltese-American team. They were married in San Francisco on October 3, 1953, a day which she always remembered as being the hottest day of the year. After they were wed, they settled in East Palo Alto then moved to Los Altos six and a half years later where they spent the remainder of their marriage.
Maryann was quite the organizer and was involved in many activities at their winter home at Rancho Casa Blanca RV Resort in Indio, California. She was in charge of the Clubhouse kitchen where she ran a tight ship for many years. She and George took great pleasure in planning, cooking, and serving Greek dinners to the other RCB residents. At home during the summer, she ran the shoe and purse department at the yearly rummage sale at St. William Catholic Church in Los Altos.
Maryann was a huge 49ers fan. In 1946, she attended the very first Niners’ game ever played in San Francisco at Kezar Stadium. She had season tickets as a young woman and never missed a game. In the 80’s and 90’s, the five-time World Champions gave Maryann a lot of thrills. Over the years, Maryann and George enjoyed traveling in their motorhome. They visited every state in the continental United States and explored every square inch of Canada and Mexico--including traveling down to the very tip of the Baja - twice!
Maryann is survived by her husband George, son Joseph of Mountain View, and daughter Mary Jayne of Los Altos. She is survived by her sister Virginia Busuttil of Grass Valley, California, and her brother John Sherry (Joan) of Folsom, California. She was Auntie Tootsie to seven nieces and nephews. Maryann leaves behind a large extended family which includes hundreds of relatives as well as many friends who date back 85 years. She is also survived by the family pet, Mimi the Little Chiweenie who misses her grandma dearly. Maryann was preceded in death by her brother-in-law, Dominic Busuttil of San Jose.
Maryann was a woman of great faith. She often accompanied her father during the week for daily Mass, and she never missed Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation. She and her father, Joseph, used to recite the Rosary daily listening on the radio. She loved to tell stories about how the Maltese Church in San Francisco, St. Paul the Shipwreck Catholic Church, was the center of their lives. Fr. Theophilus and Fr. Benny were two of her favorite priests growing up, and Maryann went to Santa Barbara for the 50th anniversary celebration of Fr. Benny's ordination. She was an active member of St. William Catholic Church for nearly 60 years.
Funeral arrangements were made by Spangler Mortuary in Los Altos. Interment was at Gate of Heaven Catholic Cemetery, also in Los Altos. Maryann Sherry was also known as Maryann Scerri.
