Obituary: on 20 July 2023: Joseph Jerry Vella, known affectionately by friends and family as "Joe", passed away peacefully on July 17, 2023, in Roseville, CA. He was born on April 10, 1940, in San Francisco, CA, where he enjoyed the majority of his life. Joe lived a full and vibrant life, characterized by his love for family, his dedication to his work, and his diverse array of hobbies and interests.
Joe is survived by his two sons, Samuel Vella and Benjamin Vella, his daughter, Julie Vella, and his two grandsons, Andrew (Teresa) Vella, and Ethan Vella. He was a loving father and grandfather, always generous with his time and thoughtfulness. His family will remember him for his unwavering support and the endless love he had for them. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Catherine and Salvatore Vella, and his two siblings, Max (Patricia) Vella and Marion Coggan.
Joe was a proud graduate of San Francisco State University, where he earned his Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Arts. His education set the foundation for a successful career at United Airlines as a Lead Machinist. Joe worked there for 36 years, and was a member of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Union. He retired after the events of 9/11. Alongside his career, Joe served his country in the U.S. Navy, where he served overseas in Vietnam and Japan. He continued his military service in the Navy reserves, stationed out of Alameda, CA. Joe’s service was a testament to his deep sense of patriotism and duty.
Joe was proud of his family, and enjoy spending quality time with them at the family cabin in Pollock Pines, CA. His adventurous side led him to various travel destinations, including Malta and Costa Rica.
Upon his retirement, Joe relocated to Oregon, where he enjoyed the slower pace of country living. He enjoyed playing with his dogs and cat, and raising chickens; donating the eggs to a local food bank. A true connoisseur of the finer things in life, Joe had a penchant for collecting railroad pocket watches, a hobby that spoke to his attention to detail and his appreciation for history and craftsmanship. He was passionate about his love for jazz music, automobiles, motorcycles, and bicycles. His prized possessions were his 1939 Cadillac LaSalle, and his Lexus IS F. An avid racing fan (of anything on wheels), he especially enjoyed watching Nascar and the Tour de France.
Joe was known for his culinary preferences as well. His favorite meal was always halibut with a wedge salad, and a Coke. Joe would never say no to his favorite desserts, Italian rum cake or tiramisu.
In his passing, we remember Joe as a man who lived life to the fullest. His interests were a reflection of his curious nature and zest for life. He was a generous man who loved his family deeply. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. As we mourn his passing, we also celebrate the life of a man who truly made the world a brighter place. Joseph Jerry Vella will be deeply missed, but his spirit will continue to inspire and guide us. He contributed their family genealogy to Maltese Immigration Project on 30 July 2023.
