Biography

Houghton side of the family back to the late 1700s when they lived in Hampshire.
I’ve now had myself and some of my family relatives DNA tested either through Ancestry.com or My Heritage and I’ve found that we have a lot of DNA matches with Americans who can trace their ancestry back to both Ralph b. 1624 and John b. 1624. I know there is little evidence of the origins of these two but they must have been related as we are to both of them and their descendants. We also have a lot of matches with Lancashire Houghtons which suggests that Ralph and perhaps John’s family originally came from Lancashire. This would explain why they called their town Lancaster.
In the UK with the National Health Service after you qualify as a doctor you can choose either to become a General Practitioner or else remain in the hospital system training for different specialties to become a Consultant. I chose General Surgery and after 10 years or so training in hospitals and 2 years research I was appointed a Consultant Surgeon in Torquay in Devon. After I was appointed we became more specialized and at the end of my career I was basically a laparoscopic surgeon (gall bladders etc.) As an NHS Consultant we could also do private practice which I did at the local private hospital. I retired from the NHS at 60 as I was fed up with the dreadful bureaucracy but continued to work in the private sector until 2 years ago when I finally hung up my scalpel. I was also an Examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons of England and retired from that last year. My post-nominals (we’re v. keen on these in the UK) are MB ChB, ChM, FRCS. Batchelor of Medicine and Surgery, Master of Surgery and Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England!

I live in the UK and my mother is an Houghton. My last known Houghton ancestor is Benjamin Houghton, born Finedon (then known as Thingdon) in Northamptonshire on 9 September 1739. His parents appear to be John Houghton and Mary (possibly Roydon) and potentially from Lancashire, which is my next line of inquiry. It is most likely that I would have a common ancestor in the USA but would be interested in from whom. Anecdotally John, Benjamin and Benjamin's children all moved within the UK, which was maybe unusual for the time.
