Tony Houghton: From the birth certificate for John Thomas Houghton, his father is listed as unknown. Two years after the birth of John Thomas Houghton, Maria Houghton married John Thomas Lawrence, we suspect given the same first names, that this is the true father of John Thomas Houghton. The siblings of John Thomas Houghton all used the surname Lawrence. On the 1911 census John Thomas Houghton is listed as John Thomas Lawrence. He used Houghton at the time he was married, we assume that this was because his legal name was never changed when his mother married.

Hope this makes sense. We are still looking at locating the families of Maria Houghton’s siblings (true Houghton’s) but as it s relatively recent finding it harder to do online.
