Catherine Clement Chrismore Houghton, 95, died at Ravenwood Lutheran Village on Saturday, Feb. 11, 2006.
She was born July 11, 1910, in Winchester, Va., the daughter of Harry Franklin and Rosa Winkfield Chrismore.
She graduated from Handley High School in 1928.
Catherine was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where she was active until 2002.
She was past president of the Quota Club and a volunteer at Handley Library. She was a Red Cross volunteer for many years.
She is survived by a niece, Eleanor Locke Cochran of Hagerstown, Md; and a nephew, William Shotwell of Deer Park, Texas; two grandnieces, Allison Childs of Glen Arm, Md., and Susan Kennedy of Waynesboro, Pa; one grandnephew, Douglas C. Cochran Jr. of Stephenson, Va; two great-grandnieces, Jessica Childs and Elizabeth Cochran; and one great-grandnephew, Ian Cochran.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2006 at 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Winchester with Rev. Richard Reifsnyder officiating. A reception will follow the service at the church. Burial will be in Mount Hebron Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Douglas C. Cochran Jr., John C. Childs Jr., Richard Kennedy, Allen Carter, Richard Carter, Donald Cline, William Tobin and Richard Crane. Honorary pallbearers will be Douglas C. Cochran, Carlton Emmart and John D. Glover Jr.

DeathFeb 6, 2006Polo, MO, USA, The Missouri Highway Patrol has concluded that Dr. Tom Houghton, a longtime Lakeland veterinarian, died when he was pinned between the bucket of a small loader and its rollcage Monday in Polo, Mo. Houghton, 60, apparently stood up and inadvertently hit the control switch that operates the bucket, according to Sgt. Scott Shipers with MHP. The death was ruled an accident.
Noteowner of veterinary clinics in Lakeland and Winter Haven, who died Monday in a farm accident. He was at his birthplace of Polo, Mo., visiting his parents and brother who have adjacent farms where Houghton kept part of his short-horn cattle herd.

Houghton owned the Cleveland Heights Animal Clinic in South Lakeland for more than 30 years. He recently completed a major renovation at the South Lakeland location and had expanded his practice into Winter Haven in 1999 with the purchase of Northwest Animal Hospital.

"He really loved taking care of animals," said Jennifer Canady, Houghton's daughter. "He loved playing a role in enriching the lives of families in our community through helping them to have healthy, happy animals they could enjoy. He really loved what he did."

Houghton was among Lakeland's best-known veterinarians and worked to promote better health care for animals and for improved conditions at Polk County Animal Control facilities.

He was a mentor to younger vets in the county who were just opening practices, and saw veterinary medicine as a team sport rather than a competition among clinics.

That last trait was demonstrated by his willingness to fill in for other vets when they needed help -one of the reasons that Dr. Dorsey Hightower, a longtime Houghton friend and fellow vet, showed up at Houghton's practice when he heard of Houghton's death.

BiographyJustice Charles Canady was born in Lakeland, Florida, in 1954. He is married to Jennifer Houghton, and they have two children. He received his B.A. from Haverford College in 1976 and his J.D. from the Yale Law School in 1979.

Justice Canady practiced law with the firm of Holland and Knight in Lakeland from 1979 through 1982. He practiced with the firm of Lane, Trohn, et al., from 1983 through 1992.

From November 1984 to November 1990, Justice Canady served three terms in the Florida House of Representatives, and from January 1993 to January 2001, he served four terms in the United States House of Representatives. Throughout his service in Congress, Justice Canady was a member of the House Judiciary Committee. For three terms, from January 1995 to January 2001, Justice Canady was the Chairman of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution.

Upon leaving Congress, Justice Canady became General Counsel to Governor Jeb Bush. He was appointed by Governor Bush to the Second District Court of Appeal for a term beginning November 20, 2002. On August 28, 2008, Justice Canady was appointed to the Florida Supreme Court by Governor Charlie Crist and took office on September 8, 2008.
