Deceased Name: LEO A. HOUGHTON
Aberdeen --- Mass of Christian burial for Leo A. Houghton, 74, of Aberdeen and formerly of Ellendale, N.D., and Springerville, Ariz., will be at 10:30 a.m. today at St. Helena's Catholic Church in Ellendale. The Rev. Gary Luiten will officiate.

Burial will be in the church cemetery with military rites by Herman Schlinker American Legion Post No. 137. Carlsen-Holte Funeral Home of Ellendale is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service today at the church.

He died Sunday, June 23, 2002, at ManorCare Health Services in Aberdeen.

Leo A. Houghton was born Aug. 29, 1927, to Arthur G. and Mary Theresa "Tess" (Morgan) Houghton in Oakes, N.D. He graduated from Ellendale High School in 1945 and immediately enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He was stationed in Guam and the Philippines. He was honorably discharged in 1946. He returned to Ellendale and received a bachelor of science degree in education from Ellendale State Normal and Industrial College in 1950. He then taught history and English in North Dakota high schools at Cogswell, Forman and Ellendale. He was also a counselor and Dean of Men at University of North Dakota-Ellendale Branch.

He married Alice Kersting on Nov. 7, 1959, in Cogswell. He then was a teacher and counselor at Job Corps in Mahnomem, Minn., as well as Alpine, Ariz., and Heber, Ariz. He then became a personnel specialist with the U.S. Forest Service in Santa Fe, N.M., Alamogordo, N.M., and Springerville. He retired in 1988 and they moved to Aberdeen in 1997.

He was mayor of Springerville from 1993-96 and was a Springerville city councilman until 1997.

He was an avid reader.

Survivors include his wife of Aberdeen; two daughters, Kerri (Gary) Stokes of Aberdeen and Lee (Jeff) Tovey of Albuquerque, N.M; one brother, Richard Houghton of Hitchcock; one sister, Betty Davis of Ellendale; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

Casketbearers will be Derril Wedell, John Hayen, Doran Kersting, Leo Kersting, Chris Davis and Brent Houghton.²

Obituary

Mrs. Catherine Houghton, aged 4S, daughter of the laxe Mr. and Mrs. Martin. Roguska of Casimir, the town of Hull, died at Dickinson. IN'. Dak., on Dec. 22 from pneumonia. Services were held at Dickinson on Dec. 24 and the body was then brought to Oshkosh for burial. Services were held there on Dec. 27, from a funeral home, and Rev. Mr. Schmitz officiated at the grave.
Tho deceased is survived by five children, Mrs. Ray Hughes of Wil- baux, Mont., Mrs. George Harp of Butte, Mont., and Jesse Thomas, Guy and Byron Houghton, all of Dickinson. There also survive four brothers and three sisters, Mike Roguska of Winchester, Wis., Theodore of Ashland, Walter of Waldo, B. C._f Peter of Libby, Mont., Mrs. B. Kitowske of St. Paul, Minn., Mrs. Oscar Rasmussen of Oshkosh and Mrs. P. Koschmider of Salem, Ore.
Mrs. Houghton formerly lived at Oshkosh, later moving to Stevens Point and then to Dickinson.

She was born Feb. 26, 1890, In Iowa to Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Shepard. On Nov 9, 1909, she married Earl Houghton in Hurdsfield, N.D. They moved to Hamilton in 1936 and then to Renton In 1947. Survivors Include five sons: Vern of Stanwood, Wash., Garold of Sonoma, Calif., Jack of Emporia, Kans, Art of Kirkland, Wash., and Delbert of Oxnard, Calif; three daughters, Mrs. Jake (Merna) Lange of Hurdsfield, N.D., Mrs. Glen (Nona) Lester of Seattle, Wash, and Mrs. Howard (Jewell) Steele of Hamilton; one brother, Verle Shepard of North Branch, MI; 20 grandchildren and 32 great— grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl In 1954, a son, Eddie in 1977, and a stepson, Glenn in 1982.

The funeral for Jack Easton Houghton is planned for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Messiah Lutheran Church. The Rev. Norbert Tegtmeier of the church will officiate. An honor detail from Fort Riley will present military graveside services at Memorial Lawn Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home.

Mr. Houghton died Thursday, June 30, 2005, at his home, 753 Whittier St. He was 83.

The son of Edgar and Pearl Shepard Houghton, he was born Nov. 29, 1921, in Carrington, N.D. During World War II, he served with the U.S. Army's 10th Armored Division.

He married Ruth Luthro on Feb. 24, 1946, in Crookston, Minn.

Mr. Houghton worked as a telegrapher for the Santa Fe Railroad for 33 years before retiring 19 years ago.

He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, Ball-McColm Post 5 of the American Legion, N.A.R.V.E. Barbershop Quartet, the National Horseshoe Pitchers Association, C.C. Camp and he National Association of Railway Clerks.

His survivors include two sons, Jerome Houghton of Reeds Spring, Mo., and Michael R. Houghton of Green Valley, Ariz., and three daughters, Penelope K. Pingree of Boston, Mass; Leanne S. Renfro of Carmel, Ind; and Sonja H. Dugan of San Diego, Calif. Two sisters, Merna Lang of Siloam Springs, Ark., and Jewell Steele of Hamilton, Mont., also survive, as do six grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild.

A sister, Nona Lester, died earlier, as did brothers Eddie Houghton, Vernie Houghton, Gaylord Houghton, Art Houghton, Del Houghton and Glen Houghton.
