Meritt: "Mr. John E. Prindle, who now lives at Russia Corners, has in his possession a small mimeographed booklet entitled Family Record of W. E. Knights, which says: "According to family tradition they (the Houghtons) came into Herkimer Co. from somewhere on the Susquehanna River, which would be not far to the southern border in N. Y. State. The family records show that the grandfather of Matilda Houghton was the first to come into this part of the state. Matilda Houghton's father was called Elijah, Jr....Caroline Matilda Houghton was the wife of Wm. E. Knights, and was born on May 13, 1825."
