Goldie Marie Hines, 27, mother of six small children, one 4 months old, died Monday at a local hospital. She was the wife of Dean Hines, a Liberty Township farmer. She recently underwent surgery for appendicitis and was returned to the hospital following a relapse.

Services were held today (Wednesday, February 21, 1951) in the Goble-Weeden funeral home and later at Beetown Methodist church, the Rev Roberts officiating. Burial was in the Beetown Cemetery.

Born in Beetown township, Mrs Hines was the daughter of Louis E and Helena Bast Houghton.

Surviving are her husband, two daughters, Betty and Carol Ann; four sons, Louis, Willis, Robert and Donald; her parents; two brothers, Melvin, Cassville, and Lyle, Beetown.3

NORWICH - Helen M. Houghton, 89, of 55 Norman Rd., Apt.B, died Wednesday evening at Fairview Odd Fellows Home in Groton. She was born in Moosup on January 12, 1916.

Helen was employed as a textile worker at the former Baltic Mills retiring many years ago. She was a member of Christ Church in Norwich.

On April 19, 1933 she married James Houghton in Baltic who died on Aug. 19, 1979. Survivors include two daughters, Shirley Topf of Groton and Debra Houghton of Norwich. 10 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. She was pre-deceased by one daughter Janet Enes.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at Christ Church in Norwich. Burial will be at the convenience of the
family. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers donations may
be made to the Fairview Resident Fund, 235 Lestertown Rd., Groton, CT 06340. Guillot Funeral Home 75 So. B St., Taftville is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Houghton was born on Dec. 30, 1911, in Manhattan, N.Y., to Jennie Edwards Hudson and Paul Harold Hudson. She was the eldest of four children, including the late Edward Warren Hudson (Elaine Duclos), Margaret Hudson Tuohig (James Elton) of Williamsburg, Va. and the late John Henry Hudson (the late Louise Spencer).

She grew up in Upper Montclair, N.J., and graduated from Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Mass. in 1933 with a Bachelor of Arts in Religion and minor in French. She spent her junior year studying in Paris. After earning her Masters Degree from Columbia Teachers College, she worked for the Presbyterian Board of National Missions ,which brought her to a faculty position at the Asheville Farm School (now Warren Wilson College). Later she participated in several public relations tours on behalf of the school.

She married Basil Manly Goldsmith of Greenville, S.C., and resided in Rutherford, N.J. Their children are Robert Manly Goldsmith (Nancy Dolan) of Fairfax, Va., David Warren Goldsmith (Janice Brown) of Candler, Mary Ellen DuBose

(C. Benjamin) of Marrietta, Ga. and Janet Ruth Goldsmith (late Albert Wayne Welch) of Athol, Mass. Basil Goldsmith died in 1957.

She earned her Masters in Reading Education from William Patterson State University in 1970 and taught remedial reading in the Title I program in Rutherford, N.J.

She married Roger Pease Houghton, formerly of Springfield, Mass., in 1978 and moved to Clifton, N.J. with summers in Hill, N.H. During the next 10 years she welcomed each of her eight grandchildren, Brian John Goldsmith, Mark Brown Goldsmith, Marie Charlotte DuBose Maynard (John), Steven James Goldsmith, Ruth Goldsmith Welch, David Benjamin DuBose, William Basil Goldsmith and Albert Wayne Welch. She also came to know Roger's sister, Barbara Baacke (George); son, the late George Houghton (Shirley); grandson, Paul Houghton; granddaughter, Patty Troll (Bruce); and great-granddaughter, Lindsey Troll. Roger Houghton died in 1988.

Friends may join the family for a celebration of Ruth's life from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Anders-Rice Funeral Home.

A memorial service in New Jersey will be planned for a later date.

He was predeceased by his father, George Houghton, and is survived by his mother, Shirley (Burns) Houghton of East Hanover; by a sister, Patricia Troll and husband, Bruce, of Gainesville, Fla., and a niece, Lindsay Troll.

He appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Ellicott, Chautauqua county, NY, in the household of his parents, William Fabius Wheeler and Martha Rachel Houghton, as Houghton, age 6, b. NY.5 He appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Pomfret, Chautauqua county, NY, in the household of Lydia Cook Cushing, his grandmother, as Houghton Wheeler (14, b. NY) with his mother Martha Rachel Wheeler and sister.6 He appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of in Ward 20, New York City, NY, in the household of Peter Barnes and Caroline McCarty, his wife's parents, as Houghton Wheeler (son-in-law, 36, b. NY, entry clerk U.S.C., parents b. NY) with his wife Amelia C Barnes.12 In 1911, Houghton was a member of the Chautauqua County Society of New York City. The entry stated: "Formerly lived in Fredonia, NY. Now with the Standard Oil Co, at 26 Broadway, New York." He was also a member of the Bayswater Yacht Club, incorporated 1892, on Long Island before 1902.13
Amelia C BARNES was born circa 1836 in NJ.12 She married first say 1858, R.B. Neal. She was also known as Millie. She appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Rhinebeck, Dutchess county, NY, in the household of her parents, Peter Barnes and Caroline McCarty, as Amelia C Barnes (15, b. NY).14 She appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of NY in the household of her parents, Peter Barnes and Caroline McCarty, as Amelia Neil (25, b. NJ) with her first husband R.B. Neal and their son Edward S Neal.15 She appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Ward 20, New York City, NY, in the household of her parents, Peter Barnes and Caroline McCarty, as Emilia Barnes (34, b. US).16 She appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of New York City, NY in the household of her parents, Peter Barnes and Caroline McCarty, as Emilia C. Wheeler (44, b. NJ, boarding, parents b. NY) with her husband Houghton Wheeler and son Edward S Neal by her first husband.12
