The funeral for Leonard Howard Houghton, 65, of 91 Knollwood St., who died as a result of a fire at his home, will be Thursday morning at the Springfield Church of God, with burial in Springfield Cemetery.

Calling hours will be Wednesday evening at Henderson Funeral Home.

Houghton was a retired 15-year stockroom supervisor for Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Co.

Born in Waitsfield, Vt., he lived in this city for the past 37 years.

He was a member of the Springfield Church of God and a member of its Boys Brigade, the Men's Fellowship, and the Senior Citizens Ensemble. He also enjoyed making root beer at the church's annual Sunday School picnic.

He also was a Boy Scout leader at Our Lady of Hope Church.

He leaves his wife, the former Doris Cook; a son, Leonard Jr. of Conley, Ga; three daughters, Mary Houghton-Bynum, Leonara Houghton, and Luciana Houghton, all of Springfield; four brothers, George of West Springfield, Wesley of Englewood, Fla., Paul of Montpelier, Vt., and Carroll of Tolland, Conn; a sister, Helen Burlock of Vergennes, Vt; six grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions for his family may be made to the Springfield Church of God, 321 Wilbraham Road, Springfield, 01109.

New Boston, NH, USA, Doris Melvin Houghton, 79, of 78 Weare Road died Dec. 27, 1995, at Catholic Medical Center of Manchester.
She was the widow of the Arthur E. Houghton Sr., who died in 1976.
She was the daughter of the late Lavalle and Mamie (Melvin) Blanchette. Born in Goffstown, she had been of New Boston most of her life.
Mrs. Houghton was a member of Philbrick-Clement American Legion Post 65 of Weare Women's Auxiliary and the Joe English Grange of New Boston.
The family includes four sons, Raymond A. Houghton, Arthur E. Houghton Jr., Charles L. Houghton Sr., and Walter H. Houghton Sr., all of New Boston; two daughters, Ann L. Houghton of Weare and Alice M. Houghton of Marlborough; a sister, Edna S. Wood of Hudson; 20 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.⁵

Charles Edward Houghton Jr. '35, April 28, 2000, in Wolfeboro, N.H., at 87. He attended Harvard Law School. He was a plant manager in the roofing industry for 13 years, then owned and operated the Holiday Inn in Intervale, N.H., for 26 years before he retired in 1976. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Winnifred White Houghton '36, his daughter, Patricia Houghton Marr '61, his son, Charles E. Houghton III '66, five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.⁶
