BiographyMy father: Russell Houghton Hooker (1911-1984) by Margaret Houghton Hooker Moser


My father, Russell Houghton Hooker, was the second son of Donald Russell Hooker and Edith Houghton Hooker, born October 10, 1911 at home in a rented house in Govens, Baltimore, Maryland. He had blonde, curly hair and blue eyes and had an athletic build all of his life. Although he was only an average student and received tutoring throughout his schooling, he graduated from the Gilman School, Princeton University, and Johns Hopkins Medical School and became an abdominal surgeon. He had one older brother, Donald Houghton Hooker, and three younger sisters: Elizabeth Houghton Hooker and Edith Houghton Hooker (fraternal twins) and Beatrice Houghton Hooker. (More to follow on each of the siblings.)

In about 1913, my father's parents bought property on a lane in the Roland Park section of Baltimore. They named the street Saint George's Road and built a large house at 1016 St. George's Road which was named Uplands. The family lived at 1016 with their five children, several foster children and household help. Cora, a mainstay of the family, had worked for the Hookers as a cook since she was 16; she also acted as a nanny to my father and his brother Don. The girls had a French nanny. The family later had a cook named Helen (who was nicknamed "Lion" by Beattie because she yelled at the children), Rose (the laundress), Maddox (the butler), and a gardener and his family. Rose and Maddox took the bus to the house each day. The other servants lived at Uplands.

My father was a handsome, outgoing, energetic boy raised by parents who philosophically believed that children should do anything that they wanted to do and would learn by example (a philosophy adopted by his mother which carried over into his own child rearing practices.) He had a pony and pony cart as a child and a motorcycle with a side car as a teenager. He learned to fly an airplane when he was about 15 or 16, and when he was in his early 20's he used to sneak up to my mother's house when they were dating, throw stones at her window to wake her and then take her flying at dawn–a dashing figure. There were few instruments in airplanes of that day. My mother told me that a cork bobbed in a tube of gasoline in the cockpit which indicated the level of fuel remaining.

During the summer, my father's parents took the family at first to Fenwick, Connecticut to join his wife's older sister (Katharine Houghton Hepburn) and family. (The house in Fenwick is now owned by my father's cousin, actress Katharine Hepburn. It was originally purchased by my grandfather D.R. and then given later to the Hepburns.) When my father was about 14 years old, my grandparents decided to summer in Greenville, Maine. When they first traveled by train to Greenville, they stayed in a rental house called "Runway Camp." Later, they bought property on Lower Wilson Pond and built the Little Island Camp in 1927 and the Mainland Camp in 1928. (More on the camp will follow.) In his early teens, my father had a small white and brown mongrel named Sportina. In his early twenties, he had a speed boat on Wilson Pond called a Hornet. My mother first went to Little Island Camp as a visitor when she was about 18 years old as a guest of my father's sister Liz. According to my mother, there was some "pussyfooting" going on.

In the mid 1930s when my parents dated, they joined an active social circle in Baltimore, making the rounds of parties and sporting events with their friends from Gilman and Roland Park Country School. As a child, my parents always seemed to me to be a golden couple surrounded by friends having exotic and exciting parties.

Prior to his marriage to my mother, my father took a family friend and neighbor, Bett Tottle, on a date during Prohibition. They sat in the dark outside on a blanket, sharing some home brewed gin on a hot summer evening. The next morning there were holes in Bett's dress where the alcohol had spilled. My father told me that it was lucky that they weren't blinded.

My mother told me that my father was his mother's golden haired boy; he always sat next to her at the table and she would pat his arm or hold his hand. There are films of my parents at weddings, parties, and sailing outings in the late1930s which show them smiling and happy together. I have a letter from my father to my mother's father from the early days of their marriage in which my father states that she is the perfect woman for him. (More about the wedding and their early years together when I write later about my mother.)

In July 1942, the United States entered World War II. My father left for the war when my first brother Creight was 6 weeks old and I was two and a half. My father became a Captain in the Army Air Corps (now the U.S. Air Force). He was in military service for three years, serving in North Africa, Sicily, India, England, and China. My mother compiled an edited version of the letters that he wrote to her during the war. (Copies are with me and each of my brothers.) From the letters he wrote, his overseas tour of duty seemed rather boring. He spent a lot of time setting up medical offices, waiting for patients with minor injuries, and typing reports on an old manual typewriter. In his downtime, he set up Officers' Clubs and tried to figure out how to stock the bar. Reports have it that the Officers made liquor out of medicinal alcohol when necessary. Once he found a downed German airplane in Sicily, dragged it back to camp and spent a lot of time patching it up and trying to fly it.

In 1945 when World War II ended, my father returned to Baltimore where my mother, my baby brother Creight, and I had lived with his parents and sisters at 1016 St. George's Rd. I remember the night that he came home from the war. I was asleep in a crib under the sloping eves of a room at the back of the house. When my father came into the room, I awoke to find that he had brought presents. One of the gifts that I remember well was a Chinese umbrella which was waxed, yellow and stiff, and smelled funny.

After my father's return from the war, we moved to Atlanta, Georgia until my father was discharged from the military. I have two memories of this time. I was about five and Creight was about three. Creight and I found a large can of blue powdered paint and decided to spread it all over us. My mother put us in a bathtub to wash the powdered paint off and the water turned to bright blue paint. Creight and I had blue in every crease of our bodies. (Since Creight was only three at the time, this was probably my idea–one of many that got us into trouble.) One night I couldn't sleep because some puppies in the neighborhood were crying and whining. My mother told me that the owners had cut off the puppies' tails. I thought that was really barbaric, and I still sometimes think of how I felt that night.

Following my father's discharge from the Army, my parents took the family on a trip across the United States so that we could pick a place to live. We traveled in a Packard convertible. Since there was no air conditioning at that time, my father devised a way to keep me and Creight (aged 5 and 3) from falling out of the open windows. He tied a slip knot in a rope, tied one end to the struts holding up the convertible top, and put the slip knots around our waists. We traveled this way across the hot deserts going west, in spite of my mother's concerns that we would be cut in half if we fell out of the car. I remember stopping at Hot Springs, Arkansas and swimming in a hot, bubbling swimming pool. On the trip, I lost "Mickey," an old, well loved sharkskin belt of my mother's with buckles on each end which I used to rub my nose as I sucked my thumb while falling asleep. This loss was a major tragedy in my young life. No doubt the loss did not make the trip any easier on my parents.

My father finally decided to do his residency in surgery at the New York Hospital where he had completed his internship prior to the War. My mother, Creight and I moved to a house on Nannahagen Road in Pleasantville, New York, about one hour's drive from New York City. My father spent the week in New York City and came out to be with us in the suburbs on weekends. (My memories from Nannahagen Road will be covered later in the section on my childhood memories.)

After completing his residency, my father opened a private surgical practice in Pleasantville. He had a secretary named Helen O'Reilly, a waiting room, and one surgical office. He had privileges at the Mount Kisco hospital and one rich client (a Rockefeller) who once gave my father a pair of silver candelabra for removing a cook's appendix. My most vivid memory of this time is that I developed a sebaceous cyst on the outside of my left leg (calf) when I was about seven or eight years old. My father decided to remove the cyst in his office, although my mother fussed that doctors were not supposed to work on their own family. My father gave me a local anaesthetic (an injection that really hurt), removed the cyst, showed me the gooey white contents and the tough round covering, and gave me three stitches. I still remember that day each time I look at the scar.

In 1948, my parents sold the house on Nannahagan Road and we moved to an old Victorian house on the top of a hill called Hayes Hill overlooking Pleasantville, N.Y. The address was Green Meadow Road--an address that I liked a lot as a child. (I will talk of the years in this house when I discuss my childhood.)

My second brother, D.R. was born in 1949 and my third brother Greg was born in 1951. About this time my father closed his private practice and went to work at the Mount Kisco Medical Group, a group practice near the hospital. There were two surgeons in the practice: my father and Dr. Grant Sanger. They got a bonus each year because they were the highest wage earners among the physicians in the group. My father worked at the Mount Kisco Medical Group until he retired at age 52 or 53.

During this period, my father, whose parents were agnostics, found religion. He was baptized in the Presbyterian Church in Pleasantville, New York along with me (age 9), Creight (age 7), and D.R (infant) in 1949. He then became interested in the Moral Rearmament Movement and attended many of their meetings. By 1951, he became an Episcopalian and worshiped at the Church of Saint Mary the Virgin in Chappaqua, New York, where for a time he was a deacon and my brother Greg was baptized. He regularly attended church on Wednesday and Friday mornings as well as on Sunday. I sang in the children's choir at Christmas and remember learning to genuflect (much to the horror of my mother's Presbyterian parents).

My father and mother moved with my brothers to Bedford Village, New York in December 1959, just weeks before my marriage to James Anthony Hoyt in February, 1960. They lived in Bedford until my parents were divorced on March 3, 1964 when I was 24 years old, a young wife and mother of two. My father remarried a woman he had met at church (Saint Mary the Virgin in Chappaqua, N.Y.) many years before. After living in Mount Kisco for a year or two with his new wife Anita Norseen, the widow of a former patient, they moved to Anita's farmhouse, Misty Meadows in Bolton, Massachusetts, a town that had been founded, un beknownst to him, by my father's Houghton ancestors in the late 1600s.

My father retired from medical practice and became a gentleman farmer. He and Anita raised cattle, sheep and ducks and had numerous vegetable gardens and fields of hay. Several years later he became the local school doctor in Bolton. After that he did some pro bono research in methods of reversible male birth control through surgery at a research facility in Wooster, Massachusetts. (I have a copy of one of his published research papers.)

He developed prostate cancer at about age 60 and had surgery to remove the prostate. Ten years later he got a backache and called me at my office to ask what I did when I got a backache. I told him that HE was the doctor! He finally visited a physician and found that the cancer had returned and moved into his spinal column. He had more surgery and radiation, but refused chemotherapy. He said that he did not want to be part of an experiment. He lived for about a year, walking carefully with a cane as the cancer had made his backbone fragile. During that time he reached out to each of his children to give us advice and tell us that he loved us. Considerable emotional healing occurred for all. He wrote a letter to my mother quoting scripture and telling her that perhaps they could do it better "on the other side of the veil." The last thing that he sent to me was a cover of the New Yorker showing a weatherman looking out the window at a lot of small hearts falling from the sky–there were no words as my father was too sick to write, but the message was clear. He told Creight that he loved him and advised DR to give up drinking. After selling his cattle and reducing the number of other animals on the farm, he passed away in his sleep at the farm in Bolton on May 11, 1984. I had been on my way up to Bolton for a visit when Anita called with the news of his death.

A memorial service was held on May 19th at the Trinity Episcopal Church in Bolton, and a stained glass window at the church was later dedicated to his memory. My youngest brother, Greg, gave the eulogy. Creight stepped up to speak when his son Stephen was so overcome that he could not read his message from the grandchildren. My brothers and I returned to Creight's home in Branford, Connecticut after the funeral and spent the weekend with our mother and my brothers' families. Creight's youngest son, Tom, was about 9 years old; Steve, Creight's eldest, was about 11 or 12. Greg's first child, Cassidy, was a three month old infant. My children did not attended as neither of them could be reached before the funeral. My father was cremated and his ashes were placed in Anita's garden at the Misty Meadows farm in Bolton.

Luther Houghton
At West Laurens, Friday, June 4th, the home of Mr, and Mrs. Perry Webster occurred the death of Luther Houghton, aged eighty years. Mr. Houghton had lived in that vicinity from early manhood. Previous to that he had lived at Maryland. He married, Julia Weatherly to whom four children were born. She died many years ago. Mr. Houghton cared tenderly for his motherless children and late in life enjoyed a home with the daughter, above mentioned. One daughter, Mrs. Adella Haynes and one son, Delos Houghton and one brother, Melvin Houghton of Maryland survive him, besides grandchildren and relatives who will miss him. Mr. Houghton had been a consistent member of the Christian church for many years. A kind neighbor and friend is gone. Much sympathy is expressed for the family.The funeral was held from the home on Monday. The Rev. C. C. Volz of Morris spoke words of comfort to the bereaved ones. The floral tributes were beautiful. Interment in Bennett cemetery. Our West Oneonta Reporter.

Maryland - Burial services for Mrs. Georgiana Hitchman, who passed away March 14th, were held Saturday, April 29th. The body was removed from the Tillapaugh Funeral Home Vault in Schenevus and placed in the family plot in McKown cemetery. Relatives attending from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. Clair Robinson of Franklin, Don Chamberlian from Oneonta and Mrs. Leona Hitchman and daughter, Evelyn of Schenevus.
