Feb 14. -- Justice James Warren Houghton of Saratoga Springs, a member of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, Third Department, died in Boston this morning following an operation for appenicitis. Justice Houghton was born at Corint, N. Y., Sept. 1, 1856. He was admitted to the bar in 1879, and was County Judge of Saratoga County from 188? until 1899, when he was appointed a Justice of the Supreme Court by Gov. Rooseelt. The following year he was elected for a full term of fourteen years. In 1903 he was designated to sit on the Appellate bench by Gov. Odell, and in 1910 was designated a member of the Appellate Division by Gov. Dix. His term would have expired Dec. 31. 1914.

HON. JAMES W. HOUGHTON was born in the town of Corinth, Saratoga county, September 1, 1856, son of Tilley and Charlotte (Dayton) Houghton. The family is of English descent and early settled in Saratoga county, removing from Lancaster, Mass. His father was a prominent man in his day and was well known, especially throughout the northern section of the county. Judge Houghton was educated at Canandaigua Academy, Canandaigua, N. Y., and after completing an advance course in that institution, which at that time had a high reputation, taught school, reading law meantime, and was admitted to the bar at Rochester in October, 1879. In January, 1880, he came to Saratoga Springs and began the practice of law. By industry and painstaking care in the preparation of his cases, he rapidly established for himself a lucrative practice and a high position amongst the younger members of the bar. In 1888, after an exciting but friendly contest, he was nominated by the Republican convention of his county for county judge. A great effort was made by his Democratic opponent to defeat him on the ground of his youth, but he was elected by a large majority. His services on the bench met with such approval that in 1894 he was re-elected without opposition, his nomination being endorsed by the Democratic party. He is regarded as a hard working lawyer, who prepares his cases for trial and argument with great care and research. His arguments are clear and logical, and as an advocate he possesses strong ability before both court and jury. His great strength is in his plain, forceful and straightforward manner of presenting his case. He is engaged upon one side or the other of nearly all the important causes in his county. In April, 1884, he married Elizabeth M. Smith of Saratoga Springs, and their children are James T. and Elizabeth.2,4,17,3

NoteMay 7, 1915He survived the sinking of the RMS Lusitania, which was sunk by a torpedo from a German submarine. Dr. Houghton was on board the Lusitania in first class. Dr. James Houghton, 29, was from Troy, New York. He was the son of Supreme Court Justice James Houghton. Dr. Houghton was a surgeon who graduated from Harvard Medical School.

While onboard the Lusitania, Belgian Red Cross fundraiser Marie Depage had solicited him for help on the Western Front field hospitals to work with her, her husband Dr. Antoine Depage, and nurse Edith Cavell. Dr. Houghton had told Marie that he signed a new will the night before leaving New York. Marie in response described herself a "happy fatalist" (Hoehling/Hoehling, 79).

James was in his cabin, E-64, when when the Lusitania was hit. He and Marie then made for A-deck where they worked busily to calm women and children and assist them into the lifeboats. Marie also helped bandage the hand of Matt Freeman, the amateur lightweight boxing champion of England, who had hurt his hand in assisting the lowering of lifeboats.

As the water rose up to the decks, Marie and James made for the rail. They jumped from the portside just as the deck was awash and were caught by the suction. Dr. Houghton was hit in the head as they went under and the force of the water separated them. Marie became entangled in ropes lying on the deck, but managed to get herself free. Dr. Houghton then saw Marie struggling, but then she was swept away. When he came up, Marie was gone.

Dr. Houghton got aboard a damaged collapsible and was rescued by the 050. Before rescue, one account given said that he saw George Vernon go mad and dive off the lifeboat.

Dr. James Tilly Houghton died on 25 March 1931.

Dr. James Tilley Houghton of South Orange, N. J., who was one of the survivors of the Lusitania, died yesterday morning in St. Luke's Hospital after a short illness. He was 46 years old.
Born in Rochester, the son of the late Warren Houghton, Dr. Houghton was a graduate of Harvard University and Medical School. He had recently been employed by the Travellers Insurance Company of Newark, N.J.
Dr. Houghton was one of a party which included Mme. de Page, head of the Belgian Red Cross, bound for Belgium on the Lusitania when it was torpedoed by a German submarine on May 7, 1915. Although injured, he jumped from the ship and was later rescued.
During the Word War he served with the 165th New York Infantry, the old Sixty-ninth Regiment. Immediately after the war he went to Athens, Greece, where he served under Colonel William Haskell doing relief work.
Dr. Houghton is survived by a widow and a sister.10

IN the death of James Tilley Houghton at South Orange, N. J., on March 25, 192,1, the Class of Harvard, 1908, as a whole sustained a distinct loss. To many of his classmates and contemporaries at college, his sudden and unexpected decease filled their minds with a deep sorrow commensurate with the strength of their thoughts and their emotions. His demise came with startling effect, because it followed so closely his strong and healthy appearance among us. His death suggests the thought that no man of virile qualities dies without leaving the memory of characteristics which may profitably be recalled to mind for instruction and imitation. Tilley Houghton was a good citizen, a brave soldier, he was honest and sincere — his professional life wrought great good and it was without reproach. He was a firm, faithful and steadfast friend. He was a genial and pleasant companion. His social relations were joyous and happy. Occasionally a man comes along through the world whose contact with others inspires and stirs their best emotions. Tilley Houghton was of that class. He was of that type which attracts attention, awakens admiration, solicits confidence, and cements friendship. This amity of his was as firm and lasting as his indomitable will. His sincerity secured him, as much as is possible in human nature, against deviation from fidelity to friends or truth. Tilley Houghton's connection with all that was interesting in life was intimate and extensive. He was representative of many interesting phases of life. His life, his character and his accomplishments were such as to warrant reflection upon them.
He was born at Saratoga Springs, N. Y., on July 23, 1885. His father was James Warren Houghton, a Justice of the Supreme Court of the State of New York, and his mother, Elizabeth Smith Houghton. He was prepared for college by private tutors and came to Cambridge in the fall of 1904. It was then that most of us met him for the first time. Many can remember his infectious chuckle as we were introduced all around at the mass meeting for the Freshman Football Team at the Union. He was a prominent member of the Pi Eta Society and took leading parts in several of the Society's shows. He received his college degree in 1908 and three years later his medical school degree. Four years after that, he was on the Lusitania as a member of Madame De Page's party on their way to join Dr. De Page in his hospital work at La Panne in Belgium. When the fatal torpedo struck the ship on May
7, 1915, Tilley joined hands with all the others of his group, and when the word came, jumped. He alone, of his companions, survived. In 1916 he went to the Mexican Border with the Old 69th Regiment of New York under Colonel William Haskell. It was then his remarkable friendship with Colonel Haskell began. When the United States entered the World War in 1917, he immediately went back into the 69th Regiment and overseas with them in the Rainbow Division, which was the first Division to go in October, 1917. After the War, he went to the South Sea Islands on a treasure hunt. How characteristic that was of Tilley! That was in 1921. In 1923, Colonel Haskell asked him to join his staff on the Red Cross Relief work in Greece and we all know how bravely and well he carried on in the plague-infested regions of Greece and Macedonia. And how proud he must have been when King George of Greece knighted him and conferred upon him the Order of St. George. It was in January, 1924, that he went to Honduras to take charge of a new hospital at La Ceiba. He knew that a revolution was on there but went along just the same. He found the hospital woefully unequipped
and only an emergency kit and a few medicines with which to treat and operate upon about 450 wounded. He performed several successful operations, using only a razor blade. He picked the wrong side of the revolution and when he came back to the States what a story he told of his escape through the forests on a hand-car and by boat to safety in Guatemala. Tilley Houghton was married twice. In 1916 he married Mabel Parsons and the following year his son, James Tilley Houghton, Jr., was born. He is now living in Albany. Tilley and his first wife were later divorced and in 1929 he married Caroline H. Prichitt. Upon his return from Central America, Tilley resumed private practice and during the last years of his life had an important position with and did responsible work for the Travelers Insurance Company. A situation can hardly be conceived in which death, in the midst of a desirable life, would seem to be more unwelcome, and yet, with the fortitude which bore him through the perils of war and pestilence, he was able to submit with resignation. Of all the brave things he did, the bravest was at the end. He was told by those dear to him that he had Undulant Fever instead of the deadly streptococcus in the blood stream. With his excellent knowledge of medicine, Tilley surely knew the truth. Yet never once did he let down, nor let his loved ones know that he knew, but he laughed and played the game all through his suffering. As he had lived and borne the great responsibilities of life with courage and fidelity, so he died. His death was heroic, firm, consistent. We, who were his friends, only ask of kindly Nature that time and fading sense may never take from us, while we live, the rich memory of such a man with whom we went so little way and yet so pleasantly.

BiographyNotes for Charles Cassort Sackett:

Charles C. Sackett, Canandaigua, was born in Canandaigua January 17, 1859, a son of Frederick A. Sackett, a farmer of this town. The grandfathers, both paternal and maternal, were natives of Connecticut. Charles C. was educated in the academy, with a course at Poughkeepsie Business College, and his father having several farms, Charles acted as manager of these. When, in 1887, the subject was agitated of building the Canandaigua Street Railway, Mr. Sackett, in company with Mr. Clement, Mr. Cooley and Mr. Milliken, was among the first to take hold of it, and Mr. Sackett was the general manager and constructor of the line, with F. O. Chamberlain as president. In July, 1892, Mr. Sackett, as trustee, became the owner of the road, and he is now president, the company having $30,000 capital stock. Mr. Sackett served as supervisor during the years of 1890-91-92, being a staunch and active Republican. He married in 1884 Charlotte Houghten, of this town, sister of Judge Houghten, of Saratoga county.
