Obituary: on 14 May 2011: Joseph Philip Borg January 4, 1941 - May 14, 2011 At rest with our Lord at the age of 70, after suffering with Parkinson's Disease and other health ailments in recent years. Joe was a native San Franciscan, born and raised in the Mission by his parents, Emma and Carmelo Borg. He graduated from Galileo High in 1959, a proud member of the Mighty Lions football team. In his senior year, Joe was selected to the First Team, All-City football squad at the Guard position. At that time, San Francisco had four daily newspapers - Joe was the only player that year who was a First Team, All-City player selection by all four newspapers. After graduation from Galileo, Joe attended San Francisco State and is an honored inductee into the Galileo Hall of Fame, Class of 1992. Joe lived and worked in San Francisco his entire energetic and vibrant life. He was last employed at Mayta & Jensen General Contractors for 35+ years, until his retirement in 2004; in his last several years there, he was a company Partner. For many years, in addition to his regular full time employment, Joe tended bar on weekends at various establishments in San Francisco, including Tony Nik's in North Beach, 20+ years for Turk Murphy at Earthquake McGoon's Jazz club, and finally for the Clima family at Joe's Fish Grotto in the Excelsior district. In 1971, Joe met his soul mate, best friend and future wife, Jane. Together, they renovated and created a wonderful home in San Francisco and ventured many times together to Europe, Canada and New Zealand. Joe loved gourmet food and was an excellent cook, having attended classes at Le Cordon Bleu in London and the Tante Marie and Judith Ets Hokin cooking schools in San Francisco. He was also a passionate World War II history buff. Joe is survived by his cherished wife, Jane, younger brother Fred and wife Susan, sister-in-law Jenifer DeSouza and husband Doug, brother-in-law Don Blankenship and wife Donna and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Joe was preceded in death by his parents and older brother, Charley. Joe will be terribly missed by all family members and his many long-time friends and neighbors. Jane will miss his irreplaceable daily companionship, steady guidance, gentle comfort and unconditional love. At Joes' request, no formal services will be held. Interment will be in the Fountain Court at the San Francisco Columbarium, One Loraine Court, San Francisco. Joe was an adoring husband and true friend. If you wish to honor Joe, please keep his spirit alive by remembering him with your thoughts and prayers in the months and years ahead, for the kindness and happiness with which he lived his life and brought to so many others throughout his lifetime. Thank you Joe, for your special gifts of love and caring you gave to us all. Rest in peace, knowing yours was a life very, very well lived. We love you. "He lived and laughed and loved and left. And the world will never be the same".
