Maria, 2. Research: Janice Mifsud Khahil, 2022: I believe my grandmother was born in Alexandria, Egypt. Something happened to Mr. Vassallo (I'm not sure what) but my great grandmother either married Mr. Vella or he took pity on a widow and took care of them. I've even heard that my great grandmother divorced Mr. Vassallo which would have been very rare for those days. I believe my great grandmother's maiden name was Medati. Medati is predominately and Algerian name but also common in Malta. My mother and I visited John M when I was 3 in 1948 and he was 98. She called him Nanu.
2024: She was married to Salvatore Vassallo b. circa 1860. Then married to Johnmarie Vella b. c 1850. So Johnmarie being 98 years old in 1948 is correct. I hope this helps.
I believe that Antonia was either divorced or widowed when she met Johnmarie who, I believe, was also widowed. My mother told me that their blended families sailed to Australia from Malta with all of the children and then to Canada. Johnmarie and his blended family lived in Torronto before emigrating to San Francisco.
I'm going to look into the Maltese in Alexandria Egypt to maybe learn more about what my grandmother was doing there and who she was married to at the time. I do know that there was a group called the French Maltese who lived in Egypt. That would fit in with Johnmarie who always wore a French beret and was very proud of being half French. His mother may have been French.²
