Beloved wife of the late John Darmanin, Sr; mother of Rita (Lloyd) Goldberg and John (Linda) Darmanin; grandmother of Christopher (Mari) Darmanin, Brian (Brooke) Darmanin and Matthew Goldberg; she is also survived by family in England, Australia and Malta. Doris was born in Qormi, Malta, to John and Rosaria Caruana, the eldest of nine children. She married John Darmanin, Sr. in 1953 and immigrated to Detroit, Michigan where they started their family. They later moved to San Francisco, California where they started their first restaurant business, "The Little Isle" and later the "Valletta". Always passionate about cooking and feeding people, we will all miss her excellent food, hospitality and laughter around the table.¹

     John F. Darmanin Sr was born on 12 March 1930 in Hamrun, Malta. He married Doris Caruana, daughter of John Caruana and Rosaria (?), in 1953.¹ John F. Darmanin Sr died on 9 July 2008 at age 78. Biography Per daughter Rita: Both were excellent cooks. Dad being an expert at Pastitzi. Mom , sweets were her specialty, like Figoli, Qaq tal Ghasel, imgaret. But she could cook everything. Soups, rabbit, macaroni and Qassatat., to mention a few. They had their own restaurants. Two of them. First, The Little Isle , from 1959 to 1961. From 1961 to 1962, with Sam Vella, he began operating The Harbor Light, a bar next to Sam’s café in Tiburon. They then went to Australia. Then The Valletta, from 1963 to 1969. They loved people and loved to feed them. They catered parties and events for many years. This is how most people will remember them. My dad was also an automobile painter for Ford, in Detroit as well as in Australia. We lived in Melbourne for about one year from 1962 to 1963. Dad was also a truck driver for the Chronicle newspaper in his later life.
Kind of the Gypsy life, from Malta, to Michigan, back to Malta (where my younger brother was born), back to Michigan, then San Francisco. Then Australia, before finally coming back to SF for good.

He is survived by his beloved wife Doris; his daughter Rita (Lloyd) Goldberg; son, John Jr. (Linda) Darmanin; grandsons, Christopher and Brian Darmanin and Matthew Goldberg; brothers, Remigio and Joseph and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Lorenza and Emmanuel; his brothers Oscar and Carmenu; and his sister Salvina. John was born on the island of Malta and like many Maltese people of his generation; John emigrated to the U.S. to make a better life for his family. He first arrived in the U.S. in 1952 when he began working for Ford Motor Company in Detroit, MI. He later moved his family to San Francisco in the late 50s and soon afterward became a U.S. citizen. He opened his first restaurant, "The Little Isle" in the Bayview District and later "The Valletta Restaurant" in the Portola District. He was invited by the Maltese Consulate to participate in the San Francisco Gourmet Gala and other international food events in SF preparing many food specialties of Malta. John worked for the SF Chronicle as a transport driver and retired from the Newspaper and Periodical Drivers and Helpers Union Local 921. Some knew him as "Johnny Valletta" and others in the Maltese community called him "tal-pastizzi" referring to the Maltese specialty pastry "pastizzi" that were second to none. Pastizzi were truly his claim to fame and enjoyed by the Maltese community as well as many others. He will be missed by his family and friends for his charming personality and generous heart and he will be remembered for his love of the horse races, his pastizzi, and most of all for his love for his three grandsons, his two children, and Doris, his beloved wife of 55 years.
