Nancy passed away on February 28, 2017 in Bradenton, Florida. She was born September 15, 1940 in Washington, D.C., having moved to Sarasota as a child and graduating from Sarasota High School and Sarasota Beauty Academy. She is pre-deceased by her parents, Charles and Dorothy Bradley.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Robert (Bob) Houghton, as well as her children: Alice (Jeff) Siemer, Carol (Brett) Flannigan and Van (Donna) Houghton, all of Manatee County, along with her sister Micky (T.C.) Watson of South Carolina and brother, Terry Bradley of Myakka, Florida. Nancy was also the loving grandmother to 6 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased in death by her granddaughter, Ashley McKenna.
Nancy was devoted to her family, and her second love was animals of all kind. Her home was often referred to as Houghton's Farm, as no animal was ever turned away and animals of all kinds cohabitated together, just as nature intended. She passed away with her family at her side, quietly and peacefully. Her love will remain in our hearts forever.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Bishop's Animal Shelter or Tidewell Hospice. At Nancy's request, there will be no funeral service. The family will welcome family and friends at the home of Jeff & Alice Siemer, Parrish, FL on Sunday, March 12th between 1:00-4:00 p.m.

Thank you for your email that came via my cousin Ken Hunt in Australia. Unfortunately I don't have a great deal of information about the Houghton side of my family, but I am more than happy to share what little I have. I have attached a pdf of their tree as I know it. My grandmother was Katrina Vanderwell who I remember. Her husband was William Houghton but he died before I was born. They were married in West Derby, Liverpool in 1900. It is likely that their father was John Houghton who was born in Bebbington (now spelt Bebington and where I live). The River Mersey runs between us and Liverpool where Katrina was born, but even at that time there were reguar ferry services across it.William andKatrinastarted married life in Tranmere, this side of the river, where Ralph, my father was born. I don't have the dates for his sibblings but they were all older than him.

Katrina's father was Danish and came to Liverpool, so I was told, as the First Mate on a schooner. He was born in Flensburg which is now in Germany and was the subject ofawar between the two countries in the 19th Century. Unfortunately I can't remember his first name (I'm sure I have a note of it somewhere). Anyhow, it looks like he was hedging his bets as he also used aGermanic version of his surname, von-der-Whel. The conflict may well have been a factor in why he decided to settle in Liverpool. 

I hope this fleshes out some of the information you already have, and you seem to have a great deal. I'm happy to help out in any way I can and so I will send a copy of this email to my brother in case he has anything to add.

Thank you for all this fabulous information.My father was a plasterer, as was his father and his father before him, so knowing that John Houghton (b.1851) was a plasterer absolutely ties him in. In the early part of the 19th Century Tranmere and Rock Ferry were all parts of the parish of Bebington, St. Andrew's being the parish church. As Birkenhead grew, a new church, St. Catherine'swas built in Tranmere. Originally this was a chapel to St. Andrew's but, in time, itbecame a parish in its own right.

Eastham was the neighbouring parish to the south of St. Andrew's and, as such was incorporated intothe borough of Bebington in 1922. So when William and his new wife,Mary settled in Eastham in the early 19th Century, it was only a short step to Tranmere where he would have found work either on the building sites or the shipyards. As the census shows, he went from being an "Agricultural Labourer" to "Labourer".
