ObituaryBen B. Houghton, son of Marshall Scott Houghton and Viva Mae Johnson Wynne Houghton, was born June 20, 1951, in St. Joseph, Mo. He departed his earthly life on October 21, 2011, at the age of 60 years and 4 months after a struggle of several years with cancer and associated complications.

A memorial service will be held at the First Christian Church in Gallatin at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 27, with family visitation at the church one hour preceding the service. A private burial of the cremated remains will be held at a later date. Memorial Contributions may be made to the First Christian, Gallatin. Arrangements under the direction of McWilliams Funeral Home in Gallatin.

Ben was a 1969 graduate of Gallatin High School, attended Northwest Missouri State University, and received his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Missouri Western State College.

He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1973 at the end of the Vietnam Conflict, and served in the Army Reserves until his discharge in 1978. He was married to Christine Matney of Gower in 1976, and the couple has three children - Margaret Houghton of Prairie Village, Kan., James Houghton of Kansas City, and Stephanie Hight of Oak Grove.

Ben had been an employee of General Motors, taking early retirement due to health reasons. He was also self-employed as an electrical, heating and air conditioning contractor during the time he was raising his family in Gower. Ben was married in 1996 to Debbra Cornell, and they made their home in Lees Summit. She preceded him in death in 1997.

After his retirement from General Motors, Ben moved to Meldrim, Ga. He retained his membership at the First Christian Church in Gallatin, MO, as well as ties with his family and the community. Ben enjoyed helping out his friends and family and could always be counted on in times of need. He loved riding his Harley and going to events that allowed him to do so.

Ben was preceded in death by his grandparents; his father, Marshall Houghton; four uncles, Leland Houghton, Bob Manning, Forrest Wynne and Cecil Clevenger; two brothers, Donald and Richard Houghton; and his wife Debbra.

Survivors in addition to his children and are his mother, Viva Houghton of Gallatin; brothers Howard Houghton of Hutchinson, Kan., and Charles Wynne of Lincoln, Mo; sisters Janice Marshall of Independence and Marsha McBee of Pleasant Hill, Iowa; five grandchildren; aunts Nina Clevenger and Frances Wynne of Gallatin and Lucy Manning of Kansas City, many nieces and nephews, other relatives and a world of friends, all of whom were caring, loyal, and devoted.

She was a member of Kansas City Homebuilders Association, American Association of Interior Design and was a former member of Mt. Olivet Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. She was preceded in death by her father and her grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. George Braathen and Mr. & Mrs. Oscar Bergerson. Survivors include her husband, Ben B. Houghton, of the home; her mother, Doris B. Bergerson, Minneapolis, MN; a brother, Darryl A. Deceased Name: Doyne LaVal Houghton died of heart complications Aug. 24, 1999, at his Valdez home. He was 61. Services and burial were held Aug. 28 in Valdez. Mr. Houghton was born Feb. 8, 1938, in Yakima, Wash. He initially moved to Alaska in 1947. He graduated from high school in old-town Valdez and later barbered for many years in Anchorage. Mr. Houghton was ordained as a minister in 1983 at Abbott Loop Christian Center and moved to Valdez to pastor Valdez Christian Fellowship. He retired in 1992 and opened his current barbershop the following year. His family said: ''He was completely devoted to both the Lord Jesus Christ and his close-knit family, and his favorite days were spent with this family and two golden retrievers at his house in the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, on 30 acres of land that he called Swiftwood. ''He loved to be outside and spent many days from the time he was a teenager hunting and hiking through the wilderness. ''Doyne will be remembered by his family and friends as an easy-going man with a steadfast faith, gentle spirit and loving heart. His wisdom and quiet sense of humor will also be sorely missed.'' Mr. Houghton is survived by his wife, Kay, and five daughters, Beth, Annalisa, Kristi, Holly and Rebecca, all of Valdez; daughter and son, Cathi Chapman and Dan Joos; father, Les; brother, Stan; sister, Anita, all of Oregon; and seven nieces.
