He was born in Gallatin, Mo., and had lived in Kansas City most of his life Mr Houghton worked for the U.S. Postal Service and then for the Federal Aviation Administration before he retired. He leaves four sons, Richard Houghton Jr., Marshall Ben Houghton, Terry Jay Houghton and Patrick Houghton of Kansas City; two brothers, Donald Houghton, Mission, and Howard Houghton, Hutchinson, Kan; and seven grandchildren. Graveside services will be at 11 a m Saturday in Hillcrest Cemetery, Gallatin.

GALLATIN, Mo. — Hugh W. Houghton, 100, Gallatin, died Saturday, Aug. 8, 1998, at a Daviess County Mo., health-care center.
Mr. Houghton was a carpenter, and served in the Navy during World War I. He was a life mem ber of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2172, Gallatin.
Born June 9,1898, in Rappahannock, Va., he moved to Gallatin as an infant, where he was a lifelong resident. He was a member of the First Assembly of God Church, Gallatin.
On June 18, 1935, he married Juanita L. Nation in St. Joseph. She died in 1998.
Mr. Houghton also was preceded in death by a daughter, Huella Tate; and his parents, William and Mary.
Surviving: a son, Jack, Topeka, Kan; three grandchildren; Five great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

ObituaryJack Houghton Jack Houghton was born in Gallatin, Missouri, on July 3, 1923 to Hugh Houghton and Jennie Shoemaker Houghton. He died Friday, August 30, 2013 in Draper, Utah. He had recently suffered a stroke. In 1943, he married Vivian Frost who survives him. Jack joined the Navy and served in WWII as a Pharmacist Mate in the Pacific. Following the war, the couple settled in Topeka, Kansas, where he was employed by Goodyear Tire and Rubber for the next 33 years as a painter and carpenter. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with friends, his family, and retirement. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, his son Randy (Mary) Houghton of Rio Rancho, NM; his daughter Sandy (Rick) Fink of Herriman, UT; and granddaughters Amy (Dave)Crow of Topeka, KS, and Kacy Franklin of Valley Park, MO. He is also survived by his niece, Shirley Ashford, of Iola, KS. Our thanks to Draper Rehabilitation Center and Dignity Hospice.2

When the sheriff dropped him off, the boy went into the house, obtained a .22 caliber Derringer, and shot Sheriff Houghton three times. He was 65.

BiographyLeland was Sheriff of Daviess County at the time of his death. Gallatin is the county seat of Daviess County, and is known for it's squirrel cage jail. Leland and his wife, Beulah, lived in the residence part of the jail and took care of any Daviess County prisoners in the squirrel cage jail and ran dispatch from their residence. Leland was killed while on duty, in 1977.7
