ObituaryJun 3, 2009KENOSHA - Ralph John Houghton, 89, passed away peacefully early Monday morning, June 1, 2009, at Kenosha Hospital in the presence of his beloved wife and five children. Born April 14, 1920, in Hoopeston, Ill. to Ralph J. and Veronica Houghton, Ralph lived a long and fruitful life and will always be remembered as the 'Music Man' for his tireless contributions to music in Kenosha and throughout the state. Ralph served his country during World War II. An Army Infantry Captain, he was captured by the German Army at the Battle of the Bulge and escaped over Christmas, 1945. He was Honorably Discharged in 1945. He met his wife of 63 years, Mathilde Jane Houghton, while attending Illinois State University, Normal, Ill. They were united in marriage on June 4, 1946. With a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education, he moved to Racine. He later received a Masters in Administration from DePaul University. In 1947, he became the Music Director at Franklin Junior High School in Racine. At the age of 28, he was unanimously selected Outstanding Young Man of the Year by the Racine Jaycees for starting a band and a chorus at the school at which he taught. In 1955, he and his family moved to Kenosha, where music and the name Ralph Houghton truly became synonymous. Appointed Director of Music for Kenosha Unified Schools in 1956 when there were only eight music teachers spread over 17 public schools, he nourished the program into a musical powerhouse that became a model for public schools throughout the country. Always working on the front line, Mr. Houghton was instrumental in organizing the Band-O-Rama, the Great Lakes Band Championship, the Orchestra Festival, the Choral Festival, and over a dozen more annual music events. He helped combine the competing Tremper and Bradford bands to form the Band of the Black Watch, and founded the Band-Boosters as a network of band support for parents and the community. The original Ice Cream Socials were held in his own front yard, Ralph and Jane's former residence on Seventh Avenue. Ralph Houghton was appointed Assistant Superintendent of Schools for Kenosha Unified in 1979. With new, non-music related responsibilities, he still made sure funding and support for music, theater, and the arts never went to the wayside. Mr. Houghton was a founding member of the Kemper Center Board of Directors. At the state level, he established a high school music honors program for the Wisconsin School Music Association. He retired in 1987 at the age of 67. In the years to come, he still remained active in promoting music, from seeing through the construction of the Kenosha Band Shell to privately mentoring his own grandchildren as they took on musical instruments themselves. In 2008, the sheet music and recording archive at the Wisconsin Center for Music Education in Waunakee was named the Ralph Houghton Honors Library. Over the past 50 years, Ralph Houghton received more honors for distinguished service than could be mentioned on a single page or that he would care to admit. Humble to the end, Ralph always deflected credit for his success back to the community and those he worked with. In May of 2008, he received the Anderson Arts Center 2007 Lifetime Achievement Award and was presented the last two portraits done by renowned Kenosha artist, George Pollard, a close, personal friend. This was a final testament to Ralph Houghton's status as a true Kenosha legend. His capacity for community service seemed endless, but nothing meant more to Ralph than his family. He was a loving, faithful husband; a wise, compassionate father; a fun, supportive grandfather; a patriarch by every definition of the word. To all who knew him, he will be remembered as a great storyteller with meticulous attention to detail, a gracious host, an avid sports fan, a political enthusiast, an entertainer, a shoulder of support, and an inspiration. Ralph was preceded in death by his father and mother. He is survived by his wife; and his five children, John (Janey) Houghton of Roseville, Calif., David (Koreen) Houghton of Kenosha, Kathy (John) Spiro of Gathersburg, Md., Steve Houghton of Bloomington, Ind., and Mary (James) Erickson of Kenosha. Also surviving are his cousins, Renick (Jan and family) Ross of Janesville; 16 grandchildren; and nine great- grandchildren. We love you. Visitation for Ralph will be held at Proko Funeral Home on Thursday, June 4, 2009, from 5 until 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 5, 2009, at 9:30 a.m. from Proko Funeral Home. ObituaryJan 16, 2014Mathilde Jane Houghton 1925 - 2014 A supportive wife, outstanding mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully Tuesday evening in her home at Harmony Assisted Living Center. She was born Mathilde Jane Whitehead, in Canton, Ill., on Feb. 13, 1925, to parents Raymond and Arminta Dorcas Whitehead (nee Ross). With a Bachelors Degree in education, Jane was a keyboarding instructor at Tremper High School and later at Gateway Technical College. She retired in 1987.
Jane was well known for hosting entertaining parties at her and Ralphs former residence on 7th Ave. The original Band Booster Ice Cream Socials were held in their front yard. Jane was a singer, and performed in many harmony groups over the years. Through the 1990s she sang with The Sweet Adelines, a senior womans chorus. Jane and Ralph were instrumental in the creation of the Kenosha Band Shell. She loved family, and was always there for her children and grandchildren, traveling to see them, looking after them in whatever way she could, doing fun activities, and watching the Packers with them. Jane is preceded in death by her father and mother; husband; daughter, Mary (James) Erickson; son-in-law, John (Kathy) Spiro, and close cousin Renick Ross. She is survived by her sons, John (Janey) Houghton, David (Koreen) Houghton, and Steve Houghton, daughter Kathy Spiro, and cousin Janet Ross. ObituaryFeb 27, 2013Kenosha, WI, USA, Mary Sue (Houghton) Erickson 1957 - 2013

Mary Sue (Houghton) Erickson, 55, passed away peacefully on the evening of Feb. 22, 2013, at her home in the presence of her beloved husband and four children.

Born on July 29, 1957, in Kenosha, Wis., to Ralph and Jane Houghton, Mary lived a good and fruitful life and will always be remembered as someone who constantly encouraged and lead by example. A graduate of Mary D. Bradford High School she attended the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Mary met her loving husband and best friend of 24 years, James N. Erickson, while living in Kenosha. They were united in marriage on Oct. 22, 1988.

After attending University of Wisconsin Whitewater, Mary earned a certificate and license to teach birth to 4k education and eventually a certificate in preschool administration. Mary was a licensed pre-school teacher for 27 years in Kenosha, Wis., and ran a home daycare center for 11 years. In 1994 she was awarded Pre-School Teacher of the Year for the greater South-eastern Wisconsin area. She then worked as a three and four year old teacher at Pleasant Prairie Renaissance School specializing in Reggio instruction. She eventually served as director of Pleasant Prairie Renaissance School for six years before finally being employed by the Kenosha Unified as an educator at the Chavez Center for learning.

She was an avid supporter of fine arts in the Kenosha Unified School system and served on the Band Boosters organization and as a band chaperone for the better part of two decades. Mary also loved watching and attending Packer games with her husband and family. Over the course of their marriage Mary and Jim held many social events at their home as they loved to entertain and offer hospitality. In her later years, Mary became quite the gardener and was always eager for spring so that she could begin her work! Above all else, Mary was love. Her faith in a promise after death gave her a joy and compassion that made even her last days seem like a celebration. The world had more joy because of Mary. Her memory will live on in every single person she encountered and she will always be remembered as someone who loved unconditionally.

Mary is survived by her loving mother, Jane Houghton of Kenosha, Wis; her husband, James Erickson; her children, John ( Andrea ) Anderson, Andrew Anderson, Janelle Erickson (Nate Buchholz), Julie Erickson, and her soon to be born grandsons, Johnathon Joseph Michael Anderson and Owen Ross Anderson. She is also survived by her siblings, John ( Janey ) Houghton, David ( Koreen ) Houghton, Kathy Spiro and Steve Houghton.

Visitation with the family will be held from 1 p.m - 2 p.m. followed by a memorial service at Crossway Community Church at 13905 75th St., Bristol, Wis., on Saturday, March 2, at 2 p.m. Published online at KenoshaNews.com on February 27, 20132

BiographyBio The Bio of 2004 is down there. Since then everything has changed. I finally returned to my home and it was not pretty. Fortunately I like to hang paintings at eye level because the water only got four feet in the house. The paintings in the French Quarter looked fresh. I sold my cart to a man on the street. He's giving it to his son to sell art on Jackson Square. I'm still painting in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Yes, yes, the kids are fine and Nicole is very fine. And the cats came with.

October 2005 The thread that has bound all my experience in New Orleans has been paint. I moved here in 98 and painted my landlord’s house. I got with a French Quarter restoration crew and slapped paint on a few more places. I became an art teacher for the unspeakable Orleans Parish School District. My classroom had a lot of paint around it by the time I was asked to leave. I tried my hand on Jackson Square, and now it’s been four years.

Nicole and I have been together eight years - got married May 2001. Do you like babies? Our daughter Tabitha and our son Gavin appear numerously in the Photo Gallery. They are not for sale. So anyway, right now I’m painting our house. And the cat came back.
