Howard A. Houghton. Michigan has every reason to be proud of her educational system and the men who govern its destiny, for on the whole they are men of high standards and of lofty ideals who recognize that the real purpose of teaching is to prepare the young for the duties and responsibilities of life. Keeping this thought ever in mind, Howard A. Houghton is now doing excellent work as superintendent at Blanchard.
Mr. Houghton was born in Mecosta County, Michigan, October 23, 1904, a son of Henry G. and Mary L. (White) Houghton, who are farming people of Mecosta County. In the acquirement of his education he attended the Edmore high school, from which he was graduated in 1924. He was afterward a student in the Central State Teachers College of Mount Pleasant, where he won his life certificate. He gained his Bachelor of Science degree at the Michigan State College at East Lansing. In the fall of 1925 he began teaching in Gratiot County. Since that time his attention has been given to teaching and to study, whereby he has advanced his knowledge and increased his capability as an instructor. In the fall of 1929 he went to Pewamo as superintendent of schools, occupying that position for three years. He then spent a year in the Michigan State College and in the fall of 1933 went to Hanover, Jackson County, where he remained for four years as superintendent of schools. In the fall of 1937 he came to Blanchard to accept the position of superintendent and he is the Smith-Hughes teacher here, as he was at Hanover.
In April, 1928, Mr. Houghton was united in marriage to Dorothy D. Tupper, daughter of Irving and Ella (Sutherland) Tupper, and to them were born three children, Joyce Arlene, away November 27, 1936, many friends as well as Robert Max and Bariife and mother passed deeply deplored by
many friends as well as by her immediate family. Mr. Houghton is a consistent follower of the teachings of Masonry and along the line of his chosen profession he has membership with the Michigan Education Association and the American Vocational Association. He is actuated by a progressive spirit in all that he does in connection with the schools and his work is proving highly satisfactory.
