Milton, MA, USA, "He has lived in Milton on the same farm his father owned."; All 14 children born in the original Houghton house; letter: "when a pupil he was a better scholar than his teacher... I can recollect him when in his prime. He was about five feet eight inches in height...He had a pleasant blue eye, but when he chose to put fire in it, that eye could look daggers....and in Arithmatic was not exceled by any man in the town...He was a successful instructor of youth; and kept the public school in the District in which he was born and ...up for twenty four seasons in succession. He wrote all the wills and other important documents for the whole neighborhood, and was often sought for this purpose by persons far distant...In religion he was a moderate calvinist and a firm Baptist, but no bigot. He claimed the right to think and act for himslef over all subjects, and the same right he cheerfully and fully granted to others. In politics he belonged to the Jeffersonian school...was sent more than once to represent Milton in the Massachusetts house of Representatives. He was a justice of the peace and often one of the selectman of the town."^14,29
