"I was desperate, in debt, in poor health and needed money badly. 1 had asked Horace (G. Barnard, TuIsa, SF capitalist) for money so often he probably thought 1 was bluffing. 1 was prepared to prove it.” Thus Reuben Albert Houghton, aged 38. El Cajon, CA, rubber and hardware salesman, tried to kill himself and Barmare with a dynamite blast, Tuesday¡ if the latter did not give him $1500. He told his story in a quavering voice and with a trace of tears in his eyes under questioning by Sheriff A Garlnnd Marrs and County Attorney Dixie Gilmer in the latter's office today. Houghton was arrested at the office of John Rogers, chamber of commerce president and attorney for Barnard, in the Drew building, Tuesday morning as he entered with a box containing eight sticks of dynamite and 100 percussion caps. A 22 caliber automatic pistol was found in his belt at the same time. "I don't know how much money Mr Barnard and Mrs.. McFarlin (Mrs. R M McFarlin. wife of another Tulsa capitalist) have given me in the last several years. It may have totaled the $100,000 they claim.
Given Automobile Business
"Most of It came to me through an automobile business they set me up in at Corpus Christi, Tx. It included a building. McFarlin came to California and asked me to go to Texas because J. A Chapman (a capitalist business associate of Barnard) had bought a lot of land there and thought there were big opportunities. I did not ask him for that money or the business. "I probably wouldn't even be married today if that, opportunity hadn't been offered. You can understand what happened. I was just a kid without any business sense and It didn't take me long to lose the business.
I was at Corpus Christi four years. In California, I suffered a recurrence of throat trouble that I believe was traceable to some lye burns I received when I was just a child. I also suffered from astigmatism and was not permitted to do any reading. I didn't get along so well. I needed money for living expenses, taxes and life insurance as well as some debts. I figured the $1,500 would put me back on my feet. But Horace did not choose to let me.
"I was working as a man of all purposes at a lumber yard and hardware store owned by relatives.It was there that I got the dynamite and cps. I had owned the pistol long time.
Was paying On Note
Houghton said he had given a note to an El Cajon bank some time ago and up until about four months ago had paid it all down to $75. The bank was pressing me. I formerly had an account with a few dollars left in it at a Colorado Springs bank So I write a $750 check last Friday, paid off the note at the California bank and left the remainder on deposit to my credit. When I decided to come to Tulsa I cashed another check for $225, bought a round-trip ticket by airplane and flew to Tulsa from San Diego, arriving Sunday noon.
Under insistent questioning bv Sheriff MArrs, Houghton finally said, "Yes, I hoped it wouldn’t happen but I probably was ready if neresaary.
Despite a suicide note or farewell letter to his wife found in his room, the officers also found a return ticket by plane on Houghton's person as if he were making a gamble on winning his appeal.
Houghton said he had no idea what the California or Colorado banks might do about the overdraft checks he wrote in California. Concerning a $40.000 trust fund created by Barnard and Mrs. McFarlln for Houghtons mother. Mrs. O.S. Houghton now living in San Diego, he said, “Yes. that was done but it was in the Exchange Trust Co and for a long time after it closed its doors, she received nothing. Then she started. getting $75 a month and now I believe It has been increased to $100. Houghton drank several glasses of water as he talked and once repeated a statement that he had made several times, Tuesday. "I guess I'm all washed up."
Appears Bewildered
He appeared still to be bewildered and his statements not infrequently contradicted themselves until additional questioning from the officers straightened him out. Even at the end of the conference he reiterated. “I was just bluffing". He said the only experience he had had with dynamite was occasionally sticking in one stick to “blow out a stump or something. He said he had no idea whether his ' bomb" would have exploded if he had thrown it on the floor or fired into it with his pistol. The only trouble he had been in previously, he said was a 30-day jail term served in 1925 on a moral delinquincy charge.
“There were seven men involved in that case, he said. The girl was 18 years old. She got in trouble, attempted to make one of the men marry her, failed to do so and then told a story implicating all of us.
In a farewell letter addressed to his wife Nell and 9-year old son. Houghton said in part “I had so much to live for. Anyone with a family like I had should be grateful and proud and stay with things to whip all hazards, but I didn't have the sand Money isn't everything in life, but it goes a long way to make happiness.
“You will all be better off without me. 1 had no education or background. and no business sense. Or what it takes to make a good provider. You have been so brave and good through it all. I was sorry for vou and a11 the rest to end myself this way, but I went so far I couldn't stop I just couldn't come home and face you. You kids have each other. Stick together and forget. "I gave Horace all the chance to help me, but no help. I didn't intend doing anything crooked. You know that. But I did intend doing something bad before I left California and couldn't come home a whipped dog
Houghton entered a formal plea of not guilty to a charge of attempted extortion before pleas Judge Kirte Logsdon Tuesday afternoon and was held for preliminary hearing August 18 under $5.000 bond. Public Defender C. S. Walker is in charge of his defense.
Bloodshot eyes back of his specacles indicated sleepless strain recently. He is slight of build, with waving reddish hair, is five feet, 11 inches tall and weighs
149 pounds.
