Steven Robert Grech, a beloved son, father, brother, and friend, passed away on March 17, 2025, after a challenging journey with cancer. Born in San Francisco, California, on May 15, 1965, to Ben and Elsie Grech, Steven grew up in San Bruno and spent his adult life in the East Bay.
Following in his father's footsteps, Steven built a career as a longshoreman for the ILWU, supervising the loading of container ships at the Port of Oakland. He was also dedicated to a lifelong career as a mentor in the AA community, where he led others to find their path to sobriety. Steven's instinct was to help others. When his father became ill, Steven took care of things his parents needed help with.
Steven had a passion for fishing, especially fly fishing, and looked forward to the trips he would make with his fishing buddies and confidantes. He loved gardening, and didn't let gender stop him from being the only man in a rose gardening club. Steven enjoyed firing up the BBQ and kicking back in the backyard that was his oasis.
Steven met the woman who became his wife, Doranna Hill, playing in an adult softball league. They moved to Clayton, along with the two girls that Steven raised and came to call his daughters. He is survived by his mother, Elsie Grech; siblings, David Grech and Susan Hanshaw (Dean Guadagni); daughters, Nina Siglin and Christina Gibson (Daniel); grandchildren, Mason and Hazel; and many friends whose lives he impacted.
A Funeral Mass will be held on March 27, at 10:30 AM, at St. Robert's Church, 1380 Crystal Springs Road, San Bruno, followed by the burial at Holy Cross Cemetery, Colma. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the American Cancer Society.
