Together we celebrate his soul lifted to our Heavenly Father along with his eternal happiness.
John was born in Mosta, Malta August 1929 . He is one of 10 children. and survived by his sisters, Carmeline Buttigieg, Dorothy Spiteri and only remaining brother, Joe Spiteri and Wife Mary along with his many nieces and nephews who were loved by him.
After WWII and his time in the British Army he immigrated to Australia looking forward to a new adventure in his life. That was lived shortly. He boarded a ship to Canada with San Francisco being in his sights. There he met a beautiful young lady from Estonia, Lia Musikant. He was captivated by her and two years later they were married and set up home in San Francisco, CA. He knew what he wanted from the day he laid eyes on his bride and they remained in love up to the end, sixty seven and a half years.
Dad was a very playful guy and always was ready for a good time. Soccer was a favorite sport. He played in his younger days and when it was time to retire from the sport he continued to watch on TV as his past time. We all wondered how he understood the Spanish announcers when dad only spoke English and his native language Maltese! We all knew when a goal was scored because the whole house shook! GOALLLLLLLLL!!!
In our younger days we spent time at the lake on the beach or on the family boat. He loved water skiing and we loved fishing, even if those little Blue gill fish were only about six inches in length, He deboned them and fried them up because it was the only fish my sister and I would eat. Not a very patient guy, we wonder as an adult how he did it. Now I know, it was his love for us. Dad loved a good race and would challenge anyone to a run, swim or tug of war on the rafts out on the Lake. In his later years he loved playing billiards.
Dad spent his Sunday mornings with the guys at the Maltese Club. He was President of the club in 1966 and had a big political following in San Francisco. Together with the Mayor of San Francisco and Governor Reagan he brought the Prime Minister of Malta to visit San Francisco to enjoy this beautiful city many Maltese settled in. This was a great accomplishment and his way of illustrating to the community his pride for his heritage although in his heart he was an American.
Dad loved traveling and every summer he would take mom to Florida to visit with her parents and then Hawaii for some good 'ol fashion lazy time. You could not take this man away from the water. He loved the sea, the lake and the oceans. On Dad and Mom's 50th anniversary the family went on a cruise to celebrate what began on the ship to Canada. He was very happy to have been sat at the Captain's table with his wife, daughters, son-in-laws and grandchildren. It was his dream come true to celebrate and have the family together. One of the greatest memories our family has.
He was a young Nannu and he spent a great deal of time with his granddaughters. In their youth they traveled together and had a great deal of fun. He taught all the grandkids how to swim and dive and made them work hard to win a game of Connect Four against him. Our hearts sang when we saw his interactions with the all his granddaughters.
In the final stretch in the chapter of his life, mom and dad
