NEWPORT NEWS - On Thursday, April 20, 2017, our beloved Father, Grandfather and Great-Grandfather, the Rock of our family, Richard "Dick" Ernest Haughton III, age 81, was taken Home by his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ to spend eternity. It was the desire of his heart to go to his Heavenly home and also be reunited with the Love of his Life, Carlyn Jeanette Haughton, whom had passed away December 6, 2016. He retired from the Newport News Police Department as a Lieutenant, a job that he enjoyed and reminisced about often, making lifelong friends. He never fully retired, operating Haughton Lawn Care for many years to ensure his children and grandchildren were taken care of. He was a Private Pilot, owning his own plane and later becoming a member of the Tidewater Flying Club. He was known for his generosity and willingness to help anyone, but above all, he was known for his honesty and integrity. He believed in keeping his word and going far and beyond expectations. He did not just talk about how people should act as a Believer in God, he lived it daily, always thinking of others first. He was always fair and saw the good in people, giving them a chance and not judging but encouraging. He had a wonderful sense of humor and felt it was always better to laugh than to cry, a task that became very difficult after the passing of his wife. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carlyn Jeanette Haughton; mother, Dorothy Louise Haughton; father, Richard Ernest Haughton Jr; sister, Doris Curtis; son, Richard Ernest Haughton IV; and infant daughter, Jennifer Haughton. He leaves behind to cherish his memory daughters, Nanette Roos, Bobbie Sue Giuffre, and Lisa Hayes (Earl); sons, William Charles Haughton (Tiffany) and Steven Haughton; grandchildren, Matthew Hanson (April), Ernest Hanson (Lindsey), Holly Roos, Jeanette Hayes Kingsley (Matthew), John Earl Hayes III, and Crystal Haughton; 11 great-grandchildren; and many other family members he loved greatly. Special thanks to Dr. Elizabeth Harden, Andrea, MiMi, and all of the staff and nurses at Virginia Oncology for their caring devotion during his battle with cancer. A Memorial Service will be held at 12 Noon, Thursday, April 27, 2017 at Weymouth Funeral Home. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park. Arrangements are by Weymouth Funeral Home.

NEWPORT NEWS - Opal Owens Haughton, 89, died Monday, Jan. 18, 1999, at Riverside Regional Medical Center. She was a native of Newport News.

She was a member of Denbigh Baptist Church and the Ingram/Autry Sunday School Class. She was also a member of the Autumn Club, Saint Stephen's Episcopal Church.

She is survived by her two daughters, Gay H. Klich, and her husband, Phillip, with whom Mrs. Haughton made her home, and Darleen H. Schultz, and her husband, Harold Lee; her sister, Pearl O. Price of Statesboro, Ga; four grandchildren, Gregory P. Klich, Wendy Klich Satchell, Michael L. Schultz and Robin S. Barefoot; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20, at Peninsula Funeral Home and at other times at the home of her daughter, Gay H. Klich. A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 21, at Denbigh Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

WILLIAM A. HAUGHTON

NEWPORT NEWS – William Armistead Haughton, 81, died Tuesday, May 23, in Riverside Regional Convalescent Center.

A native of Warwick County and a lifelong Peninsula resident, Mr. Haughton was a lifetime member of Denbigh Baptist Church where he was a member of Russell Mitchell Bible Class and a former member of the trustee board.

Mr. Haughton retired from the steel fabrication X15 division of Newport News Shipbuilding.

Survivors include his wife, Opal O. Haughton; two daughters, Gay H. Klich and Darleen H. Schultz; two sisters, Avis H. Martin and Patience H. Bowles, all of Newport News; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are incomplete. Riverside Funeral Home is in charge.

The family will be at 22 Flax Mill Road, Newport News.
