Biography Granddaughter R. Lawson, 2019: She was an English major in College and I believe she got a Master’s in English Literature before becoming a high school English teacher in Marathon, NY. She got her BA in English from Elmira College and studied under Samuel Clemens’ ( aka Mark Twain) niece at Elmira.
My grandmother, Alice Margaret Nevin, was also an avid pursuer of all things genealogical. This interest in genealogy benefited her greatly in her old age when her cousin Frederick C Houghton who was a botany professor at the Univ of Delaware passed away in 1990 with no heirs. My grandmother had written him a letter years prior to his death inquiring about Houghton family genealogy issues/questions. This letter from my grandmother was found by the executor of his estate after his death among his personal effects. As a result of the executor finding this letter he was able to identify her (his 1st cousin) and a few of her other cousins as the sole remaining possible heirs to his estate. He was a bachelor who had never married and had no children, so as a result of the executor finding that letter she and a few relatives were able to split an inheritance from his estate which I think amounted to about $250,000 a piece after taxes and fees. This money was sorely needed to help provide financial support for her in her twilight years.

George W. Houghton, 97, of West Haven Apartments died in Rainbow Convalescent Center at 8 p.m. yesterday, following a lengthy illness. Born in Philadelphia, he had resided in Vineland most of his life. He was a member of the Senior Citizens of West Haven, a life- time member of the Gideons, member of the W^rest Baptist Tabernacle, and was formerly employed at radio station WWBZ as a custodian. Surviving are two daughters. Mrs. Ruth Lippincott of Rio Grande and Mrs. Anna King of Vineland; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at the Potter Funeral Home at 11 a.m. Friday conducted by the Rev. Benjamin Taylor, pastor of West Baptist Tabernacle. Burial
