Charles Houghton; at 75

Helped capture Nazi war criminals

By Tara Yaekel, Globe Correspondent, 1/19/2000

Charles H. Houghton, a lawyer and former Army colonel credited with capturing Nazi war criminals after World War II, died Monday in his Somerville home after a lengthy illness. He was 75. Born in Medford and raised in Somerville, Mr. Houghton was educated in Somerville public schools and enlisted in the Army in 1943, serving as a paratrooper. After the war, he remained in Europe with the Occupation Forces, and was assigned to a military intelligence unit in Vienna. His work included identifying and locating suspected Nazi war criminals, and he helped capture a number of Nazis attempting to flee Europe.
He was later transferred to the American section of the Landsberg Prison in Augsburg, Germany, the execution site for Dachau war criminals and the prison in which Adolph Hitler had written his book ''Mein Kampf.'' Mr. Houghton's job was debriefing and recording the works of Dachau Commandant Martin Weiss, among others. When Mr. Houghton returned home, he studied at the University of Utah and graduated from Boston College Law School in 1950. He opened a private law practice and reentered federal service as a special agent with the Naval Intelligence Agency.

He later served as civil defense director for the city of Somerville, and was appointed director of the US Naval District One Office of Military Intelligence.

He remained in this position until the mid-1970s, when he was appointed administrative judge for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. He retired from federal service in 1985.

Mr. Houghton served as president of the Somerville Bar Association and St. Catherine's Holy Name Society, and was a member of the American Legion, the 82d Airborne Division Association, and the St. Vincent DePaul Society. He was also a former member of the Walnut Street Center board of directors.

He leaves his wife, Agnes (Fitzgerald); a son, Charles Jr. of Somerville; seven daughters, Maureen Foster, Sheila Tracy, and Rita, Kathleen, Brenda, and Mary, all of Somerville, and Eileen Phillips of Arlington; and 12 grandchildren.

A funeral Mass will be said at 10 a.m. tomorrow in St. Catherine of Genoa Church in Somerville. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery in Medford.7,5

ObituaryAug, 1898Loren Houghton Died, at his home in Woodland, Barry County, August 3rd, 1898, Loren Houghton, aged 75 years and 14 days.
Deceased was born in Camden, Oneida county, New York, on the 20th cay of July, 1823, was the youngest of nine children born to Jacob Houghton and Chatilda (Groveyer) Houghton. At the age of ten years he commenced the work of driving teams on the Erie canal a business which he followed more less until he was twenty-two years of age, when he married Esther M. Scott of Pittsfield, Lorain county, Ohio, where he bought a farm and lived until the fall of 1852, then moving his family consisting of wife and three children to what was then the back woods of Michigan. He settled on section two of Woodland township, near where the Meyers church was afterwards built. In April, 1855, his wife died, after a long sickness, the cause of her death being consumption, leaving him with three small children to care for, which he did for a time, doing his own cooking, clearing land, and working on the farm or what was to be a farm, as the clearing was small and not a neighbor’s house in sight; but he soon tired of living alone and married for his second wife Martha Doughty, who survives him. In 1862 he sold his farm in Woodland and moved to Kalamazoo county, but not liking it there he returned and bought a piece of land in Odessa, then he moved into the township of Boston, then Berlin, the Orange, but none seemed so congenial as his first choice and in 1882 he purchased of Wm. Curtis the farm on which he lived until his death.
He was the father of six children, five of whom survive him: Loren A. is a physician in Isabella county, Rosilia, the wife of J. C. Elvert, of Cameron, Orange, Ionia county; C. E. Houghton, who lives on the old farm in Woodland; and Dinora, wife of C. Reeder of this village; and Franklin who died in childhood.
In religion the deceased was not a member of any church but a believer in God and the final salvation of all mankind.8

Milit-BegCivil War. He was a teamster. The local mules and horses in the Chattanooga area where he was serving, had been trained with only one rein. To go left, you pulled left. To go right, you laid the rein over the horse's neck and pulled right. Loren was driving a wagon down a hill and thought the horse (or mule) was going too fast so he pulled on the rein. The critter followed orders and turned into a side hill (rather than slowing down) which resulted in dumping the wagon full of supplies.6

Dr. L. A. Houghton of Blanchard, Isabella county, died on Thursday, April 10 (1907) aged 62 years at his home in that village. He once was a resident of Charlotte, probably about 1868 to 1870 where for some time he was a drug clerk in the store of G. V. Collins. In those days he was familiarly known by his intimate friends as “Bony.” He came here from Woodland. He finally studied medicine with Dr. S. Perkey, and attended the University at Ann Arbor, graduating in 1872. On June 15, 1873 he was married to Miss Diana Foster, of Carmel, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. J. Foster, and soon located in Ionia county, where he practiced medicine several years, moving to Blanchard in 1883 where he continued in his profession. He leaves two sons, one a farmer and the other a teacher in the public school. It is said that Dr. Houghton was an hororable man both in and out of his profession, and greatly respected by all. Aside from his practice he owned a good drug store, and had erected two two story building(s), besides owning as good a residence as any in that section. He will be remembered by many people here who know him well in his earlier years, and knew him also as a steady young man who gained and retained the confidence of those who became acquainted with him.11

BiographyLarry R. Houghton: I believe I have an obituary of Dr. Loren A. Houghton.... My cousin, Frederick, has his office ledger book from his medical days. I have never seen it, but was told that Dr. Houghton took a lot of produce, meat and eggs in trade for his medical services. His practice was in the Blanchard, MI area. At that time, there were enough bears in the area that he carried a revolver while on horse back whenever he made housecalls. Frederick has the pistol. I have four of his medical notebooks from the medical school at the University of Michigan; my son has his sheepskin diploma, still in good shape considering it is an 1872 document. I also have a captain's chair which was given to him when he started his practice.
I recall my Aunt Leatha Teeter who was five years old when Dr. Houghton died, saying "I remember seeing him lying on his bed with his white beard on top of the covers." Loren Houghton studied under a doctor in Saginaw, MI, then went to the University of Michigan for, I believe, two years. He returned to Woodland Township and worked with one or two local doctors. When he heard that Blanchard was without a doctor (the previous one may have died or moved on), he decided to move there and set up practice. He purchased the first frame house built in town by the town's founder, P.G. Blanchard. The house still stands and is occupied by only its fourth owner, Donald Myers, a distant cousin of mine. I believe the moving date of 1883 is probably correct. His office was in the front corner of the home, accessible from the front living room. It also had a stairway leading to the second floor. The office had an outside entrace off a small porch with a cement walkway which branched off of the main one leading to a long porch along the other side of the house. Dr. Houghton was a fairly small man. Based on his wool dress coat in our possession and of a photo/portrait of him, he was probably around 5'-6" and 130 pounds.
