Thompson:
She was ranked fifth in the 1947 class at Medford High School (about 700 graduates) and received both a Charles H. Hood scholarship from H. P. Hood & Sons Milk Company and a similar award from the Universalist Womens Organization. Cum Laude graduate of Jackson College (Tufts), Medford, Ma. 1951.

She has always had a good musical ear and has enjoyed both vocal and piano/organ activities at church as well as singing in groups such as the Sweet Adelines. Travel has been a life-long passion and she usually takes more than one trip per year with Bruce and with other teachers during vacation times, both domestic and foreign.

Jeanne spent most of her working years as an elementary teacher in the Attleboro, Mass. school system, was a school-crossing guard for several years and devotes time as a volunteer for local organizations.

Married at 1st Universalist Church, Medford, Ma., 1951.

Jeanne & Bruce celebrated 50 years of marriage with a goodly number of family and friends at Luciano's Restaurant in Wrentham, Ma., followed by a vacation in New Hampshire¹

Thompson:
Bruce was adopted by aunt Sarah H. Surrey. He later learned of family ties to early residents of Rochester, Ma. and a file has been established for David Surrey with the expectation of linking the lineage at some future time.

He enlisted in the navy at age 17 in March 1944, for the duration of the war plus six months. He had his basic training in upstate New York, at Sampson Naval Base and subsequently served as a gunner's mate with a home port of Norfolk, Va. Bruce saw duty in the Pacific, on LST 1140, which operated for a time as a shuttle going from Guam to Saipan and back. Danger from air attacks and submarine patrols existed at all times, but his ship did not see any battle action. Two typhoons were part of the his memories, though. He also remembers going up the inlet to Nagasaki, somewhat behind the main fleet, soon after the atomic bomb caused Japan to surrender. The inlet was narrow and then opened into a large bay where his ship anchored on the far side, away from the city. Even so, the men aboard could see the devastation on the land. Two years, two months and two weeks after joining, he was discharged as Gunners Mate 3rd Class. In 1996 he joined many former crewmates at a 50th reunion in Norfolk.

Bruce had a pacemaker implanted Novenber 30, 2000.

Bruce has enjoyed traveling with Jeanne and also developed his musical tastes over the years to include most styles, from popular to operatic.¹

Biography

From childhood he has been known affectionately by family and friends as "Buzz". A fine trumpet player and vocalist, he has been a church choir member. Both he and wife Lucy have always been hikers, campers and bikers, as well as participating in church and civic activities.

Graduated Malden High School, Ma. and attended Boston Univ. Also expanded his expertise through industry sponsored insurance-related classes.

Married at 1st Universalist Church, Medford, Ma. by Rev. Grant F. Haskell.

Worked in the insurance field for Maryland Casualty Co. in Boston and later for Shelby Mutual in Braintree, Ma. At Shelby he advanced nicely and was moved to the home office in Ohio, where he soon became an Assistant Secretary. Transferred to the Hartford, Ct. area to oversee the regional business, he was later caught up in a merger/corporate consolidation situation and left the firm in October 1991. Then he joined the insurance department of the State of Connecticut, until retirement at the end of May, 2000.

The leisure years will be spent in Vermont at a comfortable home complete with a large deck, located in scenic Jacksonville/Halifax/Whitingham, nicely sited on about 6 acres of rolling woodland, including a bubbling brook and occasional visits from the local bear population. One of the first projects was to design a substantial addition to the house, which opens up an bright and cheery first floor.

Notes for LUELLA PEARL "LUCY" FENTON:
Lucy has supplied many family anecdotes as well as details about her Fenton (USA) and Keddy (Mahone Bay/Lunenburg) lines. A talented painter, she has had little time for that activity. Involvement with church and civic duties in their various home towns, and her employment as a legal secretary for many years, has left little time for art. Her talent for decorating is evident throughout the home.

Lucy chose early retirement at the end of March, 2000, and soon became immersed in local Vermont activities, including the library. Living in a scenic area, she will surely return to artistic endeavors.¹
