Biography

Love: "...there is listed on the faculty of the seminary in the catalogues of 1868 and 1869, a Stella C. Houghton. She is not to be confused with the Stella A. Houghton, Class of 1864, for Stella C. Houghton is spoken of, in the address of Dr. Gallup, printed in the twenty-fifth anniversary booklet, as having died in April 1869. There has been some question as to where Stella C. Houghton fits into the Houghton family. In "The Houghton Genealogy" of 1912, there is no mention of her. We now find from he obituary, published in the Clinton Curier, Apriel 8, 1869, that she was the oldest child of Rev. Daniel Clay Houghton, D.D., in Philadelphia, beside her father and mother. She graduated from Brooklyn Heights Seminary in Brooklyn, N.Y."⁵

Love: "He was named for his uncle William Alton Houghton who died in New York City just five months after his birth."; "He was educated in the Philadephia schools...At the close of the war he joined his uncle, H.O. Houghton of Hurd & Houghton in Boston, staying with the firm until until 1869. At that time he became connected with the firm of Colton, Zahn and Roberts, map publishers of New York. In 1871 he went to Sacramento, California and established the firm of W.A. & C.S. Houghton, stationers. In 1884 he returned to New York City to become a subscription book publisher and was still operating in that field at 31 Union Square at the time of his death in 1891."¹
